Early Bumblebee (Bombus pratorum) – This is a small shaggy-haired bumblebee, and probably my most favourite of the bumblebees – if I really had to choose one. I adore its colour combination of bright orange tail and lemon-yellow abdominal and thoracic bands. But they are little devils to photograph, for they are always so brisk and busy in their work. I count myself lucky to get the shots I have here when this one visited my rear garden back in May. It is a male with long yellow hairs on his face.

Yes they are so cute and small. They like my bush Kolkwitzia amabilis, they creep right into the flowers.

We saw some of these just recently on one of our walks. They are large compared to what I am used to seeing, but it was on a path with a nice creek and flowers. They are lovely creatures – but we didn’t get a photo as they were busy flitting about.

Bee ID is something that I really should work on. But I will now recognise this one if I come across it 🙂

Love the face shot! Terrific photos.
I’ve had bunches of bumblebees in my wildflower garden this year, and have tried several times to get photos and video, but seem to only get their backsides as they crawl up inside a columbine flower or fly from one lupine to another.

Thank you, Rebecca! They are very, very challenging to photograph, and I have many backside photos, too 🙂

The Nietzsche of bumbles! It’s a good thing they don’t have to slurp food through that mustache.
