Oscar Nominee Sandra Hüller Says Strangers Now 'Shout Congratulations at Me' While Walking Her Dog

Sandra Hüller is sharing the reactions she’s been receiving to her Oscar nomination. 

In an interview with Variety published Monday, the 45-year-old opened up about being recognized in the best actress category for her leading role as Sandra Voyter in Anatomy of a Fall.

Admitting she is “definitely not” used to the growing attention from the nod, the German actress explained, “I find myself giggling in the morning because it is so nice. When I walk my dog, people are shouting congratulations at me. People I’ve never seen before!”

The French courtroom drama is also up for best picture at the 96th annual Academy Awards, along with best editing, best director and best original screenplay for Justine Triet.

Hüller’s turn as Voyter — an author on trial over the suspicious death of her husband Samuel, played by Samuel Theis — also earned her a Golden Globe nomination and a nod at next month’s BAFTA Awards, where she is also up for supporting actress for The Zone of Interest.

Hüller previously told Variety of building her fictional character in Anatomy of a Fall, "I think I wanted to create somebody who would be capable of doing it, I wanted certain people to be a little bit afraid of her. Because why do we always have to be sweet and good victims and all these things? I had a little fun in leaving it in a dark."

Meanwhile, Triet told The Hollywood Reporter of her own Oscar nominations, “For best director, I was surprised because there are no more women beside me. So, of course, I’m so, so lucky and very proud of all these things. Most of these people since I was a child I’ve admired so much, and of course to be involved in this history, it means a lot for me. It was not a dream because I could not imagine.”

Triet’s Best Director nomination marks the ninth time a woman has been nominated in the category. Previous nominees include Sofia Coppola for Lost In Translation in 2003 and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman in 2021.

The Zone of Interest is also up for five awards at the Academy Awards, including best picture and best director for Jonathan Glazer. Along with Hüller, the holocaust drama also stars Christian Friedel as real-life Nazi officer Rudolf Höss, plus Freya Kreutzkam, Ralph Herforth, Max Beck and Ralf Zillmann.
