Business owners in Daphne are being urged to look closely at the cash handed to them. Especially $100 bills.

Daphne Police say they are receiving reports of “play money” being circulated as currency in the area.

Officials confirm it’s been used in at least one business in Daphne. It’s not a crime to have play money, but it could be if you try passing it off as real currency.

Corporal Jason Vannoy with Daphne P.D. says you could be charged with attempted theft, or actual theft if the transaction goes through.

Anyone caught using the fake money could face up to a year in jail.

The play money looks real, but has a different texture than real money. It also has the words “Play Money” stamped in the lower right hand corner and upper left hand corner.
