The Botanist Gin & Jazz Evening – The Rooftop @ Folly

Nice to return to Folly after a very early ladies night in the summer. This time for the launch of “Souk Madinat’s favourite rooftop terrace” – yes I stole the tagline from the invite. The rooftop is quite dreamy in the evenings, isn’t it? You can’t really get that in any other spot in Dubai – can you? Or maybe I just need to go out a bit more?

Here are a few snapshots from the evening.

Cocktails are curated by The Botanist Gin and available for the season – so pop in and try some. I recommend the Negroni if you like it strong, the Wild Pimm’s – refreshing (think cucumber, mint, ginger ale), as was the Basil Smash.

Glad to see that they had live music for the event, with Adam Long on saxophone, and Andrea Florez R on vocals. Our last jazz session was at CMP so it was nice to see Adam at his best again, though the setlist was surprisingly different. There were the usual classics like Bob Marley’s Is this Love and Ain’t no Sunshine when he’s gone. And of course, the one everyone stops whatever they are doing and starts recording – Girl from Ipanema.

My favourite? I did not know you could jazz up Black Hole Sun. Like, whaaaat? Chris Cornell will be happy to know his song is being sung at a very classy Gin and Jazz event here in Dubai… ha ha. And keeping onto rock, we have the jazzed up version of Creep – which was beautiful. I mean, I never get to hear this in the acoustic guitar sessions that I go to. So it’ll have to be in one of these events, ay? 🙂

Rooftop at Folly is a very cosy and intimate venue. It’s a good spot for dates, or if you have a larger group they have this one setdown area which is perfect for that. Remember to walk upstairs to the very top for that insta-perfect shot of the Burj al Arab. We’ll definitely be coming back for the food. Fine Dining Matt is the expert here so if you have any queries whatsoever on what to eat – check out his recommendations in the insta post below, or ask him 😉
