The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is sending out a warning after fake $100 bills prompted people to leave the trail at the crest of Multnomah Falls and risk their safety to try to retrieve them.

The sheriff’s office says there were around 10 of the bills found in a very dangerous area at the crest of the waterfall Friday afternoon.

While they can look real from a distance, when looked at closely the bills are obviously fake.

They say, "For Motion Picture Purposes" and "In Props We Trust" on the front and back.

Luckily, no one has been hurt.

“It appears as though somebody went to the top of the falls and dropped a bunch of these bills,” said Deputy John Plock, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. “And they kind of floated down and came to rest in different parts that are not on the actual trail. So, our park rangers noticed that there were some people getting off the trail almost on cliffs going after what turned out to be this fake money. And so, park rangers went up and got people to go back on the trail.”

The sheriff's office noted that there are some online trends where influencers hide money or prizes and leave clues for fans to find it. Sometimes those prizes can be hidden in very dangerous or hard to reach locations.

While they can't say for sure if the Multnomah Falls bills were part of that trend, they do ask people to remember to use common sense, stay on the trail and know the money or prize might not be real.

Your life is worth more than that prize.
