Welcome to a wonderful, yet different winter Winter will come to Kläppen as usual, but it will be a different this year. We must take care and make adjustments. We, here at Kläppen, are super psyched to welcome you as a guest, to offer wonderful moments and excellent downhill skiing, but we must also be prepared to take swift precautions in order to reduce the spread of infection, when necessary. This means that activities and events may be rescheduled or cancelled. For up-to-date information, go to klappen.se/idag. If you need to buy groceries or other necessities in the village boutiques, keep in mind that only one person in your family should enter the premises. The rest of the family should stay in the cottage or wait in the car. BIG SNOWY HEARTS FROM ALL OF US! Gustav, the entire Eriksson family, and the staff

New!

Falken is even better now! We have made a good skiing area even better by widening the pistes for really nice carving turns and for plenty of room for snowboarding. The crossings have been adjusted so that you do not need to stop and give way and there is room for everyone whether you want to ski with speed or take it easy. In the Falken area there is always a bit more snow and the snow is a bit fluffier and colder, which offers the perfect conditions for skiing. When it is really cold in the valley, you can count on a more comfortable temperature in this particular area. If that isn’t enough, this is also where the morning sun shines during the best hours of the skiing day. Read more on page 11.

What do you want to do today? After a great day on the slopes, it is easy for the next day to be a replay. That is why we want to encourage you to find new favourites every day. Here is what five favourites might look like. TIP 1 – IF YOU WANT TO START OFF A BIT EASY. Make your way to the top and go for Myrstigen (piste 16), a nice green piste that takes you down to the bog then, on to Illern (piste 23), and finally, down to Falken’s lifts. That is the first ride and you glide the whole way from the top down to the lifts which will take you up to the top of Falken. This time you go for Illern (piste 23), all the way for perfect carving. Take a few runs in the Falken area and the next time you are at the top, go for Grävlingsgrytet (piste 17). It is a green piste that changes over to blue. Finish with Bäverdalen (piste 21) or Familjbacken (piste 27) in order to finally arrive at Tranantorget for a coffee at the bakery.

TIP 2 – TIME FOR A BIT MORE OF A CHALLENGE Today, there is no soft starter. Be at the gondola at opening time in order to take advantage of the morning sunshine. At that time, the snow is at its crispiest and newly pisted. It can be a bit chilly in the morning so, the warm seats in the gondola feel good. Go for real carving on Minkspåret (piste 30) and down to Falken’s lifts in order to go straight up to the top and meet the morning sun. Now you’ve warmed up. Glide onto the blue Hermelinsvängen (piste 13) in order to go for some black skiing at Grottbranten (piste 34). If it has snowed, there is often snow along the edges which offers loose-snow riding Otherwise, it is well-pisted snow that applies. Work your way down in order to end up at Lämmeltåget (piste 12) and go on to the gondola at Dalstation. 8 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

TIP 3 – LET’S TAKE ON THE BLACK SLOPES This time, take the chairlift up- now it’s time for a real skiing challenge. Älgstråket (piste 28) starts off as a red piste, but slopes quite well. Keep your speed up and aim for Lostupet (piste 31) which is award-winning and appointed Sweden’s best piste. Here, you need to work hard and hang in there. The steep slope fades over to green, but with enough speed you can carve beautifully all the way down to the chairlifts. Take the same lift up again. Start with the green Lämmeltåget (piste 12), but turn off onto Trollfallet (piste 33) Here there is a steep slope and the piste is narrow so, it’s all about short turns This time, take the gondola up to Älgstråket (piste 28) and continue on to Snövesslan (piste 32), which is steep all the way, and finally, glide down to Uvens lift. Here, the it alternates between aerial and surface lifts. Most likely, you have a bit of lactic acid in your legs now, so choose a red piste, for example, Älgstråket (piste 28) which has good variation and leads to Tranantorget. If it is afternoon, maybe it's time for a nice ride on Halster?

TIP 4 – CHANGE YOUR SKIING STYLE Perhaps you can feel several day’s worth of intense skiing in your legs. If so, it may be a good time to trade out the skis or snowboard to cross-country skis. Did you know that we have a Multi Package where you can switch between different rental items, skis, snowboards, or cross-country skis? Leave the family at the ski school or other activities and make your way to the track

centre at Persgården. Here, you step onto Myrspåret and glide on a nice trail through the cabin area to the snow-covered forest and out to the lovely bogs. You will pass the lean-to, next time you can bring the family and grill sausages. This is fun skiing which, at first, goes uphill then, levels out nicely, and finally, goes downhill on lovely slopes that are not too steep. Along the trail, you have gorgeous views of the Sälen mountains. It is a wonderful

feeling to be alone out in nature and just listen to the sound of the skis against the snow. This is a reasonable morning tour, after which you can meet your family for lunch at one of the restaurants on Tranantorget.

TIP 5 – WHEN CHILDREN GET TO CHOOSE Today is children’s day! Start in the children’s area and take the surface lift. Stay on the children’s slope for a while and let the kids high-five the lift hosts. Children get bold rather quickly. At this point, it’s time to take Ugglans lift to the Junior Snowpark (piste 7), stay in the park for a while and start with several green jumps and try out boxes and rails toward the end. Challenge the children and let them show off their tricks. Take a detour to Trollslope (piste 8), which is located nearby. Here, the kids can hit the troll figures to make them spin. You pass Trollgården, try to time it for when a theatre show is on so that you have a fun stop along the way. You have surely seen the magnificent Persgården by now. The waffles there will make the kids’ day!

51 300 people rode on the gondolas last season. The gondolas are very safe. There is plenty of time to get on and off, and there is always staff on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.

10 people can fit into one gondola. It usually means a pleasant conversation with acquaintances both new and old. Use this opportunity to share your experiences and tips on which slopes are best. The spacious gondolas are also filled with students from the ski school who can safely ride, chat, and sing happily together all the way up to the top.

8 minutes to travel from the valley all the way to the top. It takes five minutes if you jump off the gondola at Tranantorget. Your feet and hands will relish these minutes. Use this opportunity to photograph the view and upload it with the hashtag #kläppen.

At Falken the snow is a little colder, a little better. The Falken area is located on the east side of the Kläppen mountains. Here, there is always a bit more snow and the snow is colder and fluffier, which means the ski conditions are perfect. When it is really cold in the valley, you can count on a more comfortable temperature in this particular area. If that isn’t enough, this is also where the morning sun shines during the best hours of the skiing day. How is that possible? The secret is that the slopes are protected by the forest, which means that they are always sheltered from wind. This also means that the snow remains on the ground and that it keeps its character without becoming hard and icy. WIDENED PISTES

Quite simply, we have made a good ski area even better by widening the pistes for really nice carving turns and plenty of room for snowboarding. The crossings have been adjusted so that you do not need to stop and give way and there is room for everyone whether you want to move quickly or take it easy.

KLÄPPEN’S HIGHEST PEAK

The view of a frosty mountain and the feeling of bare mountains can be found at the highest point of the Falken area. Just below there is an open BBQ hut. Here you can take a break and eat a packed lunch. From this view you will also see snowmobile and cross-country tracks and it is a nice meeting point. EARLY SNOWMAKING

The Falken area always opens at the beginning of the season, this year it is 11 December. In fact, it only takes three days to snow the entire area if it is below freezing. All snow production at Kläppen is climate-smart. We avoid pumping water from the river by using our own pond at the peak that uses self-pressure to fill up the snow canon system, which has low-energy canons of the latest model. In this way, it uses much less energy, 800 000 kWh less per season, in fact. KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021 11

READ MORE ABOUT FALKEN’S PISTES Piste 11, Rådjursstigen: A lovely green piste from Falken Peak down to Uven’s lift and Bäverdalen. Here, the forest has been clear-cut on the right side in order to keep a good flow going at the four-way stop where you can turn off and go down Minkspåret toward Falken valley. Piste 23, Illern: The carving slope is a big favourite. Hilly and winding like a snake, levelling out towards the end and fading into green. It is now wider on the right side so that you can take proper turns. Piste 24, Skogsmården: The fun blue / green piste and a detour from Illern. We have widened the slope towards the forest on the right in the lower blue section before it feeds out to Illern again. Piste 25, Ekorrsvansen: Here, you will often find a bit of loose snow next to the Falken lifts on the left side. The entrance has been widened so that you have room to turn. Piste 30, Minkspåret: This is the piste to start off your morning with; start from Toppstugan. It is like entering a new world when the piste is bathed in sunlight during the first morning hours. The piste has been widened and the forest removed on the right side. This gives the piste a whole new character. The turns are easier to take and you can avoid braking before the intersection at Rådjursstigen. In ski lingo, skiers say left and right based on the perspective from the top looking down.

We Have Set Our Sights on the Future Again Gustav and Lena Eriksson run Kläppen, the second generation, along with employees who have worked with them for so long that they are more or less part of the family. Last season had an unfortunate ending, but for Kläppen it meant even more focus on the future. KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021 15

Steam rises from the coffee mug, the hum of children can be heard in the background along with sounds from the TV. We are sitting in the Eriksson family’s spacious kitchen. The breakfast buffet is served in the kitchen, as it usually is on their days off.

Gustav: At the same time as we were building the new hotel, we planned for the first stage of Kläppen Syd, a dream that had been on the drawing table for several years, but would become a reality season 20/21. Then the virus arrived and from one day to the next the circumstances changed.

HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP SEASON 19/20?

Gustav: It was different, but it was actually a fantastic season as well, lots of guests, plenty of snow, and it felt so good to present the new hotel. When it opened, it was a fantastic feeling and it was very appreciated by all the guests. Lena: We fought, right to the end to get most things in place. Everyone did a fantastic job and it was just as good as we hoped it would be even though the opening of the hotel was a little later than planned. 16 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST PART ABOUT COVID-19?

Gustav: To know when we should hit the brakes and the new conditions which arrived daily that needed adjusting to. We tried to coordinate within the branch, but when you live in the town yourself, you feel a great responsibility. The decision to close before Easter was right and proper, we had to take that responsibility. But man it was disappointing, Easter is our finale with lots of

activities and it was a strange feeling when everything was deserted when there were perfect conditions for skiing and beaming sunshine. SO WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE NEW SKI AREA?

Gustav: I am a goal-oriented, competitive person who hates moving the finish line, but due to Covid-19, we had to. As I said, nothing has come to a halt, it’s just been postponed. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PLANS FOR THE NEW SKI AREA?

Gustav: It will be a completely new area and step one of four is scheduled for Kläppen Syd. The first area will be called Backholen’s ski area. There will be four to five carving pistes at blue level, really wide slopes with plenty of

room to manoeuvre as we have created the pistes based on nature’s conditions. Lena: You are fantastic when it comes to slopes. Where I see stones and moss, you see pistes and fall lines. Gustav: Yes, yeah. . . Kläppen Syd has been around since 1999, but in 2014 I redesigned everything. It will be similar to the Falken area. It is important to save forest groves in the right places so that they are spread out over several downhill stretches and to take advantage of the ridges so that there will be slopes on the slopes. Lena: If there is a beautiful, old-growth forest at the top with majestic firs, it is very cosy to ski there. Gustav: The person who drives the forestry machine and fells trees has worked at Kläppen and is a good skier. He understands

exactly what we mean, what should be saved in order to create the right feeling on the slopes. He sees what we see. I would never build a slope in a place that was the easiest or most economical; skiing and nature are the steering factors. Lena: From the top, you will be able to see all the way to Trysil. Kläppen Syd will have its own entrance from the road, just south of the facility itself. It will have its own carpark, which is perfect for training groups since this area is planned to be up and running early in the season. THIS PERSONAL CONNECTION TO KLÄPPEN, WHAT IS THAT ABOUT?

Gustav: It probably stems from a shared passion for skiing and snowboarding. We share this passion with our employees and

our guests. This is our focus. Money is not the driving force. It is, rather, downhill skiing and growth that drives us and to constantly improve and make our guests happy. This permeates everything and I want our guests to really experience a difference when they visit Kläppen. As one visitor from another Nordic ski destination pointed out, “The whole facility feels authentic and genuine.” We have great employees, thanks largely to our fantastic managers. We have a close-knit management group who have been with us for a long time and we feel secure with each other. They all know what they need to do and they can spend time with the staff. We have a culture of wanting to do our best. Here, we live by this and all of the managers set a good example. We are genuine in this, it’s not just something we say. KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021 17

ARE THE EMPLOYEES ALSO GUESTS?

Lena: Yes, absolutely. We have had several seasonal workers who at one point met and became couples at Kläppen. Now, they come back with their families. Kläppen is still home for them and they want to give their children ski experiences. WHAT IS LIFE LIKE ALONGSIDE KLÄPPEN?

Lena: We have homework, pre-school pickup, and activities like everyone else and for us, Kläppen is a part of our lives. It’s no bother for us to sit at home in the evening and work. We have the chance then to discuss and we always move forward; we think quite similarly. Fun things do not take energy. Gustav: No, it’s no fun to maintain, we want to grow. We are good at taking breaks in-between. The kids are of course accustomed to living with skiing and they have been involved in naming the slopes in the Backhol area. Iris, the youngest, prefers to ride the conveyor and the gondola, she likes to go up. Down is not as fun. On the 18 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

weekends, we always have long, stress-free breakfasts. Lena: We also do a lot of cross-country skiing or walks on snowshoes. Last winter, we also invested in splitboards for the whole family. So, we can go up and ride the loose snow down on nice days. THERE ARE RUMOURS ABOUT A JUMPING PILLOW IN THE SUMMER. . .

Gustav: Yes, there is a jumping pillow here now. This allows us to be a training facility for clubs and national teams even in the summer. It is a complement to the parks. The parks are close to our hearts and our Snowpark is classed in the top three in Europe. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO?

A winter with lots of snow, that corona settles down so that the world can go back to a somewhat normal situation, good weather, and that we get to hang out and do loads of skiing and snowboarding.

FACTS ABOUT GUSTAV AND LENA GUSTAV ERIKSSON

Role: CEO Age: 41 years Favourite slope: The combination of Bäverdalen from the top, down to Järvlunken is a very lovely, hilly carving slope. Älgsträcket from the top is also really fun, the new track under the gondola is really nice. LENA ERIKSSON

THOR’S TIPS! BE THE FIRST ON THE SLOPES!

COMBINE WITH CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING!

The first runs are excellent and offer corduroy. From eleven o'clock on, the slopes are as they will be for the rest of the day. So, take a few rides before breakfast if you want that little something extra.

Cross-country is good training and it offers a little change in the evening before dinner. At Kläppen you can rent the Multipack where both alpine and cross-country skis can be combined.

Tor chose Kläppen over a CEO suit. Thor Kruse Een, who is originally from Denmark and has a family connection to Salt Lake City, has had the world as his workplace for the last 20 years. He has had skis on his feet for as long as he can remember and he has skied at ski resorts around the world. When the job as technical manager at Kläppen popped up, he left the role of CEO at a clothing company for a completely different life. In 2001, Thor met his future wife in Hemsedal. After a time in Stockholm, they settled in Gothenburg. They started a life together and that included a holiday home in Kläppen, which they have had since 2003. Now Sälen is their permanent place of residence, as his job is at Kläppen. Not only did Thor leave the big city on the west coast, he also left his job as CEO of a clothing company, whose clothing brand he himself was involved in creating. “I have skied a lot in Kläppen and when I got the offer for the position as technical manager, it was an important decision. Here, there is a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. The driving force is based on passion rather than letting the numbers rule. This was more attractive than a weekday in a tie,” says Thor and stops a lady who comes with cross-country skis in full swing. Thor says that the tracks above the children's area are very nice and recommends she go there. She seems happy and a little surprised, but heads for the cross-country tracks. “I love cross-country skiing, nothing beats a skate in the dark with a headlamp.” We stomp off the snow and sit down in the hotel lobby. He walks up and mothers some ski guests and they exchange a few phrases about this morning's corduroy. “More people should discover the benefits

of being in the lift right at opening time, the slopes are absolutely fantastic and breakfast will be even better if you take it a little later. Those rides before breakfast, they are special.” YOU SEEM TO THRIVE IN KLÄPPEN?

“Yes, I really do. Gustav builds the slopes that he himself wants to ride, even though it may not be the most economically advantageous. Building Kläppen Syd is not an easy task. We have to draw seven kilometres of pipes just to get water to the snow system, but that’s where the slants are so, that’s where the slopes will be. It is, as I said, not a numbers question, nature must decide. Syd will have unique slopes, unlike any found elsewhere in Sälen. These are the slopes that I am looking for myself, no simple solutions but a unique experience. Gustav once said that he would not give up until he built slopes to Torgås. That is the reason why I am here, neither salary nor title comes into play, but to work with people who want to grow and a product that I am passionate about.” WHAT MAKES KLÄPPEN SPECIAL?

“Kläppen’s terrain is built for skiing. The slants are perfect and the whole mountain is nestled in a fir forest, which protects the snow and provides for unique skiing. This means that ice patches rarely form. The snow

system is fantastic, the snow is laid both quickly and efficiently,” says Thor, whose passion is the quality of snow, he is happy to sit behind the levers in the piste machine. He continues: “And not least, you avoid the last half hour in the car because Kläppen is Sälen's southernmost facility. We care here, we are a close-knit group of skiers who want to make sure our guests enjoy themselves.” WHAT DO YOU THINK PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT KLÄPPEN?

“What I always hear is that people had no idea that Kläppen is so big. What is visible from the road is only a small part and that it is a paradise for all types of skiing, both alpine and cross-country.” WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT ALPINE SKIING?

“I love cross-country skiing. If I am free, I can spend the morning on the slopes and the afternoon on the tracks. I know many skiers who alternate alpine skiing with cross-country skiing. We have fantastic skate tracks, both by the river and by Persgården, where the track centre starts. I also like night skiing; to go on the cross-country tracks at night with a headlamp is a completely different nature experience. And randonnée!” KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021 23

Staying at Hotell Kurbits is easy. On your mobile, you will find your key code and also the code for the ski locker. Take your ski gear and leave it in the ski locker on the same floor as the lobby. The ski lockers are spacious so, the whole family's stuff fits. If you have pre-booked ski rental, the equipment is on site and you can take the lift up to the flat. Since you check-in at the flat with your key code, you do not have to go to reception for check-in. At Hotel Kurbits there are 30 fresh flats with either four or six beds. So, put away your luggage and go explore. The design of the hotel is cool Nordic with elements of Dalarna in a modern style. The carpet’s pattern in the hotel corridor is a classic Dala pattern from parish costumes and has since been reworked and given the Kläppen stamp. EXPLORING THE HOTEL

The great thing about staying here is being able to go around in slippers and a cardigan when you go exploring. Once you have taken the elevator up, it's time to take the stairs down. You come straight out into the spacious lobby which can be a place to land during the week, perhaps for a glass of wine and a conversation with a friendly neighbour. 26 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

Right next door is Boutique Kurbits with its magnetic force. It is part of your holiday to stroll around in gift and clothing boutiques and here you will find the perfect combination. A few steps down is Halster Bar & Bistro. Here, a delicious breakfast is served every morning with hot and cold dishes with the view of the newly pisted mountain. Already at eleven o'clock in the morning, the bar on the corner towards the gondola opens for those who want a really good beer. At lunch, delicious home cooking is served and in the afternoon we meet for a moment of pleasant relaxation after a wonderful day of skiing. There will be good drinks, snacks, light dishes, and music. The spacious room allows everyone to fit without feeling crowded even for a second. Later in the evening, à la carte dishes are served with fantastic dishes and theme nights. Surely it's nice to have all this within walking distance? It's time to ski. Your ski pass is already in the flat and after you have taken the skis from

the ski locker, it is only a few meters to the gondola. Let the ski day begin! COSY TIME IN THE FLAT

Maybe you have not really had time to explore the flat itself, which consists of a living room and one or two bedrooms. The practical sliding doors make the apartment feel spacious, but provide the opportunity to close off the space at night. After a day of skiing, it is cosy to gather on the sofa and, in the dark, watch how the piste machines start working late at night. The kitchen is fully equipped so you can cook most things, but if you have had time to look around the area, you have probably found the Bakery. In addition to fantastic pastries baked from scratch, there are delicious pizzas; a pizza night in the flat is always appreciated. Leftovers make for a quick lunch the next day. Before bedtime, it is nice to have a hot shower and then crawl into a soft bed. Some flats have windows where you can lie in bed and watch the snow softly land on the ground. From others, you can watch the play of light from the piste machines preparing for the next day. Everything is calm and nice in a wonderful community.

THREE PARKS THREE CHARACTERS Kläppen Snowpark is actually not one single park but rather three different ones. The idea behind the whole concept is that there should be a park for everyone. Little ones start at Trollslope, then on to the Junior snowpark where the whole family can go. If you want to go for the somewhat bigger jumps and try a few simpler boxes and rails, there is the blue

park, dubbed the Blue Line. The last step is the large park, where the professionals and those who want really big challenges train and compete.   Choose the park that suits you best and enjoy newly pisted landings and perfectly built jumps.

Our Park Rangers maintain the parks Every morning they do a round in all the parks. They check that all kicks look good and if the visibility is poor, the landings need to be painted carefully. They keep an eye on the parks all day. With a specially shaped spade, you fine-tune and shave off snow when it has been run up. What needs to be done is governed by weather and tempera-

ture. All of our Park Rangers are good park skiiers. Before the season, our park designers draw and plan with the utmost care, to create the best Sweden can offer in terms of parks. It is creative work and some ideas need to be tested in practice. Together, the park crew creates skiing experiences for both young and old. KLĂ„PPEN: WINTER IN SĂ„LEN 2020- 2021 31

KLÄPPEN SNOWPARK – CREATED FOR THE ELITE Many people think that Kläppen Snowpark is a parks’ park and for several years it has been the official National Arena for Swedish snowboarding and free-skiing. The world championships are held here, Sweden's top

32 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

elite train here and there is a large group of snowboarders who come here to have fun. On an area corresponding to 14 football pitches, there are jumps, boxes, rails, and Sweden's only halfpipe. Our park builders

are all skiers and snowboarders themselves, with a good sense of how a park should feel. The chairlift gives you a front row view of the entire park. Here you can check out the real pros as they seemingly defy gravity.

The Blue Line - for when you want to take the next step If the children are now too big for the Junior Park and the large park is too difficult, there is a Blue Line (piste 26) by the piste Renfållan (piste 20). These pistes are for anyone who wants to try out park skiing or improve their skills. The Blue Line is the park that opens first in the season and is open until 6 pm in the evenings because it is illuminated.

The pre-season park The pre-season park on the piste, Utterleken (piste 19) is a slightly larger park that is only available for the season December to January. Many of the best train here before Kläppen Snowpark opens.

The Junior Snowpark is presented by Helly Hansen The surface lift from the children’s area will bring you to Junior Snowpark. Here it is crowded with children who love to challenge themselves and maybe even the occasional hesitant parent. There are jumps and boxes

here, just like in the big park where the idols train. It is safely built to create smooth landings and a safe ride. The kids like to stay here for long periods of time, so why not treat yourself to a coffee at Persgården while you wait?

TROLLSLOPE FOR THE LITTLEST ONES Even little kids like to feel a good rush. Trollslope (piste 8) is a playful and simple mini park in the children's area, with figures, terrain waves and jumps. You will find it above the children's area by Ugglans lift.

Sälenfjällen's first randonnée trail Randonnée. Rando. Ski touring. Top tour. If we look out into the world, the French spelling ran-donnée is still the most common and an established form of training and skiing experience internationally. Thor Kruse Een is Kläppen’s own Mountain Manager. After many years and trips to ski resorts around the world, he has tested most things in skiing. He has practiced randonnée in different degrees of difficulty and sees the fascination of having a different skiing experience. Therefore, he is happy that Kläppen can now offer its own randonnée track. “Interest in randonnée is increasing and more people travel abroad to practice this. In Kläppen, we are building a varied randonnée track with both flatter and steeper sections,” says Thor. “SKI TOUR IN ALPINE TERRAIN”

For many, randonnée is a new concept. The word means "ski tour in alpine terrain" Simply, to climb a mountain with skis. In practice, riser skins are attached under the skis when going uphill. For this, you need a pair of alpine tour bindings where the heel is free. You do not use not ordinary ski boots either rather, ski boots with a walking position are required. In short, go uphill with 38 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

skins, go downhill on skis or a splitboard, which is a snowboard that can be divided in the middle and function as touring skis uphill and behaves as a regular snowboard downhill. GOOD PREPARATIONS FOR THE TRIP

“Above all, this is an opportunity to try the equipment if you have planned for a trip to the Alps, for example. It is a good beginner's route, but of course it can quickly become a challenging workout. You decide the pace and the number of times you ride! Several guests see this as a perfect workout in conjunction the usual alpine skiing. We will definitely see more rendonnée,” Thor thinks. The Randonnée track in Kläppen differs in mainly one area from others. “In most cases, you walk on a bare mountain and go down off-piste in loose snow. With us, you get a different nature experience, as the trail is lined with real old-growth forest. In the long run, we will offer off-piste skiing in Kläppen Syd,” says Thor.

NIGHT SKIING

Walking up the mountain along the marked trail in the dark with a headlamp is an awesome experience where nature shows its mysterious side. The Randonnée trail will be open from nine to six in the evening. For most of the winter season, it will be dark both in the morning and in the afternoon. “Safety is important, opening hours must be respected. Outside of these times, the slopes are our workplace and we must be able to work safely with snow-laying and pisting, therefore it is not allowed to stay on the trail then,” Thor concludes.

Find the right snowboard in Kläppen Did you know that many people travel a long way to visit Kläppen Shop at the Welcome Centre? One reason is the knowledge that this is where the mountain world's largest range of snowboards is located. The second is the burning interest in snowboarding and the knowledge that exists. Martin Skogstad confirms these claims and says that they have customers who travel from Norway to get help finding the right gear. We walk around the spacious boutique at the gondola's valley station, which this year has been named Kläppen Shop. Along the walls, the skis are tightly lined up and in the snowboard corner it is obvious that the range is maximized. Here is the boutique's gem for anyone who wants to buy their own gear. Here, for example, you will find Burton's Step On system with a boot, which you can 50 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

easily click into the binding without a lot of hassle with the buckle. “We are one of a select few who sell this, the suppliers know what we can do and we often get access to unique product lines,” says Martin. This is also where the rental shop is located. Many choose to have gear delivered to their accommodation. If the gear does not fit, it’s just to come in and exchange it. The rental shop also has a wide selection of snowboards in three levels, something for everyone. There is also a good selection for

cross-country skiers, with skis, in the latest models, for both skate and classic style. “We have nice cross-country tracks and with the combi card that includes both alpine and cross-country, the guest gets cross-country skiing at half the price,” says Martin.

Why you should choose the right ski boots It is easy to lose track of the years and therefore many have had their boots a little too long without thinking about the material matting over time. If you travel a lot, expect a lifespan of two to three seasons. Buying ski boots is very different from trying on ordinary shoes, so it is a good idea to ask for help. A knowledgeable person takes into account your feet and the type of ride you want, as a beginner you, for example, often want a soft ride (also called flex), while a good rider needs a harder feeling for better power transmission to the ski. Ski boots have a greater impact on skiing than you’d think. With the wrong boots, you can get pain or cramps, get tired quickly or not be able to push off in the right way and thus, not get a good turns. So, it may be a good investment to buy your own ski boots, even if you rent the skis. Of course, you try out rental boots carefully, but it is impossible to get them to completely adapt to your feet. HOW SHOULD A GOOD SKI BOOT FIT?

When you try on ski boots, you should stand up and flex forward so that the foot is in ski position. When you stand in a regular standing position, the big toe rubs against the front of the boot. That is exactly how it should be! A good ski boot fits snugly around the entire foot, without pressing on any particular point. Feet are different and if your foot is narrower somewhere, you should have a boot that takes this into account, because if the boot fits well there, it is possible to adjust the

boot in other places if it is too tight. Finding the right adjustments can be a challenge. The boot should fit snugly around the heel and around the ankle, without the boot having to be tightened so hard. “We always do a foot analysis to find the right model, because there is so much to take into account,” says Martin Skogstad who is responsible for the ski shops at Kläppen and continues: “The most common mistake is to buy boots that are too large and by that I mean not only the size, but also the adjustment range. The first step is to measure both feet and the basic rule is that the boot should be as long as your foot or a maximum of half a centimetre longer. “When you try on boots, they should be snug even when you are not tightening them,” says Martin. WHAT IF THE BOOTS SQUEEZE?

“At the time of purchase, we adapt the boots to your foot by, for example, heating the inner shoe. Then it usually takes a few days to ‘ski-in’ the new boots. If it still squeezes or hurts, be sure to note where on the foot. Come to the workshop and we can adjust the boot or mill the shell,” Martin advises, “of course it is included in the price when you purchase boots from us.”

MARTIN’S TIPS!

n Avoid letting your thermal underwear go down into the boot, this may lead to creases that chafe. Thermal underwear bottoms that end just below the knee is preferable. n Leave woollen and double cotton socks at home. Invest in a pair of good socks, designed to fit in ski boots/ boots. Your feet will appreciate it. With real ski socks, your feet will be warm and the fit in the boot will be perfect. n Always use molded soles to avoid cramps. The original soles are flat and do not provide much support so, you should invest in a pair of reinforced soles that help support the foot in the boot. They also provide smoother pressure and improve blood circulation, which means that you stay warmer and have less pain in your feet. n Do not choose a boot that is too stiff, it can, in the worst case, slow down the development of your skiing. n Be honest with yourself. How many days a year do you ski? Where will you ski? What are you going to use the ski boots for?

First season with rental clothes

Renting skis and equipment is commonplace and over the years we have developed several different packages. We have now taken the next step by also offering ski clothes for rent. There are several aspects behind this. Of course, we want to make it easier for guests, who get to reduce their packing volume, but we also want to contribute to increased reuse. If you go to the mountains for one week per year, you will certainly not wear out your alpine clothes, but on the other hand, you might realise after a few years that fashion has passed you by and your clothes may not be modern or functional. Ski clothes are a good example of garments that can collect dust in your closet if you do not belong to the category of those who ski every two weeks.

“In collaboration with Helly Hansen, we offer fine collections with good functional garments for alpine skiing. The idea is that the garments should feel like your own and that you rented them. This is something we want to do both for our guests and for the sake of the environment,” says Martin Skogstad, who is responsible for shops at Kläppen. The rental clothes are of a high quality and can be used many times over several seasons. Those who choose to rent clothes make a climate-smart effort, while at the same time

We service your gear The skis last longer and you get a better experience if you give them a little care. We recommend that you service them regularly and do not wait until damage has occurred. With a little luck, you can prevent injuries. If the skis do not glide well, the coating under

the ski may have dried out. In that case, it does not help to just wax them, you have to sand the skis to get a good result. At Kläppen Shop it's easy, you hand in the skis in the ski workshop and we fix them with our brand new sanding robot, while you wait.

STANDARD SANDING, STEP BY STEP

1. In the first step, rough sanding takes place to remove most of the scratches. 2. Next, a slightly finer sanding that removes any concave or convexity. 3. Then, extremely fine sanding which, in most cases, renders the coating completely flat. 4. On the way out, the skis pass another part of the stone that puts a structure in

the base, providing better glide. 5. Now the sanding of the coating is complete and the edges are sanded on the sides for good grip in snow and ice. 6. The undersides of the edges are also sanded so that the skis are easier to ride and do not feel as though they are only going straight ahead.

WORKSHOP PRICES

7. Finally, the skis are covered with paraffin for even better gliding. EXTRA!

If you have extremely deep scratches, we can not grind them away, because the life of the skis is significantly reduced. We will instead melt in a new coating in the scratches and then the excess is sanded away.

A Ski and Culinary Trip in One The philosophy at the Kläppen Restaurants is clear, "your ski trip should also be your culinary trip" and part of your winter experience. Restaurateurs, Janne Söderberg and Magnus Wieselqvist are passionate skiers with food and drink as their biggest common interest. Therefore, there

is a lot of love behind the recipes, different characteristics make the restaurants at Kläppen unique, and everything is prepared from scratch and the family's different tastes are taken into account.

MAGNUS’ TIPS

JANNE’S TIPS Buy freshly baked breakfast rolls from our bakery at Tranantorget. Open every day from 7.30.

Here you will find our Restaurants

Several Fridays during the season, there is a barbecue buffet at Halster. I like to go there with family and friends to enjoy good food and drinks.

Brasserie Karelius is simmering with energy Plates with classic dishes are served and the laughter from the next table is contagious, as is the scent of the freshly served char under a rich layer of shrimp. Culinary inspiration is taken from all over the world, even though the roots come from French cuisine and with a fondness for the region's

ingredients. This is a classic brasserie, where the atmosphere is like a warm living room where you can come as you are. Here you can celebrate, be celebrated, or just enjoy. Joyful and relaxed, where you can even leave your ski clothes on, even though it is evening and dinner. In the far corner

is the wine room, where two couples are deeply immersed in wine lists and taste good Italian wines recommended by the restaurateur Magnus himself, who is a trained sommelier. Behind a hidden wall a faint sound is heard, only the little ones have found their way to the hidden cinema.

The evening's menu can be found at klappen.se. Book a table at klappen.se, in the restaurant, or by phone 0280-962 42.

PRIVATE LESSONS ON YOUR LEVEL Our ski instructors offer various lessons, from basic to competition skier. You can always feel confident that you will get a ski instructor that suits your level of development. So take the opportunity for an hour’s worth of development, even if you are really sharp!

"I want to ride better on steep slopes" I have been skiing since secondary school. I have never gone to ski school. I was taught by my friends, but I like sports and think that I ski pretty well. For a few years, I snowboarded, but when the kids came along, it was skiing again. So, I really did not think there was a need to take a private lesson, but encouraged by my husband (I wonder why?), I took a lesson. Sandra, my instructor asked me in the lift what my expectations were. “I want to ride better on steep slopes,” I said honestly because I have a tendency to rush down red and black slopes and I find it difficult to carve. It’s more like stop-slides. Fast and controlled was my goal.   We started with a few rides on the family

hill, where Sandra checked out at my skiing style. I was advised to stand more on the pad behind the big toe, on the outer ski. Sandra drew a turn in the snow and described the technique of loading the ski earlier, so that I could move better and based on that get the speed to accelerate rather than ride and brake. I quickly realised that I did not know where the turn really began and where I should push from. So, I was given the task to ride a few different slopes and try what she just showed me. After a while, my upright style had changed to soft and smooth carving and I took a better and earlier entrance on the turn. An hour passed quickly, but I was ready for the black and I was the first one down Familjebacken!

!

EMELIE’S TIPS!

The snow flutters down and the space along the fence that frames Trolle & Trolla's garden starts to fill up with children and parents. Seat cushions are distributed and all children are accommodated. There is an air of expectation, which is interrupted by a loud snoring. Trolle comes out of one door, points to another, and whispers to the children that Trolla has not yet woken up. rolle & Trolla are a curious pair of troll siblings who have lived at Kläppen for more than 300 years. The first time Trolle & Trolla met a human was on a winter day in 1981, when they ran into Per in the woods. It was so long ago, you can’t even count it. You can ask your mom and dad how old they were then? Or how old grandma and grandpa were?   Per had snowshoes on his feet, which allow you to walk on the snow without getting stuck. So, children are invited to Trolle and Trolla's garden, where they live, to hear the most breathtaking stories and Trolle and Trolla take the opportunity to learn a lot of things about life in the city that the children can tell about. Children are so wise. They teach the trolls about cars, appliances, and what a job is. When Trolla heard that you got gold coins when you helped others and that it was called a job, she almost wanted to move to the city as well.

Skiers' conference - when the group gets to choose!

A number of businesses and future plans are created amongst snow drifts and dazzling sun. There is nothing that says you need to be in a conference room to be creative, but if you want, we will arrange it. We have conference rooms in several sizes.   The recipe for a successful conference is to be able to live and socialise together without the disturbances of everyday life, to be pampered with really good food and coffee, and to have time to ski and hang out. The rest follows, like a dance. Let us know what you want to achieve, and we will create the perfect skiers' conference.

Summer at Kläppen Welcome to Kläppen this summer. Hotel Kurbits is open and with Kläppen as a base, a whole mountain world is waiting to be discovered You can stay in our nice, practical rooms in a cottage or at Kläppens Camping. 78 KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021

Summer activities at Kläppen’s Camping. BELLA’S TIPS! Bella Beiron works at Kläppen’s Camping and moved to Sälen from Stockholm, to live closer to nature.

KLÄPPEN’S CAMPING

ENJOY THE RIVER

Kläppen’s Camping is beautifully located by the river bank. The campground offers river views and access to fresh service houses, showers, and a nice sauna. Here, you can park your caravan, camper van, or pitch your tent whilst enjoying the mountain life. There are also camping cottages for rent or larger cottages up in the cottage areas. At reception you can get tips on most everything!

Mirror-like and beautiful, you break the surface with a few paddle strokes or why not a cooling dip. There is a lot to discover along the Västerdal river and the flowing water helps you to float downstream.

HIKE AND ENJOY THE VIEW

Whether you are hiking on Mount Kläppen or taking a trip to Hemfjällstangen, you can enjoy the enchanting nature and beautiful views. Perhaps lichens accompany you on the hike along footbridges, rocks, and paths. There are several hiking cottages along the trails. Bring a tasty lunch on the trip.

EXCURSION DESTINATIONS

Just over an hour away is Fulufjället National Park with its special fauna and Sweden's highest waterfall, Njupeskär. A wonderful day trip that is both interesting and exciting. It is just over an hour to Mora and Zorngården or to Malung where, among other things, you can experience Dance Band Week and Skinnarspelet. EXCELLENT MOUNTAIN FISHING

There is plenty of nice fishing water. The closest is Gråhedsdammen, a put & take, just

south of Kläppen, but there are several lovely mountain lakes. You can purchase fishing licenses at Kläppen Camping. STAND UP PADDLING TO BRING BALANCE INTO YOUR LIFE

It may look shaky, but is great for training balance, strength, and movement. It’s also insanely fun. Try it on the river, but let the little ones practise in the lake or paddle together on the same board on a joint trip. TRAIL RUN

We are proud to present our lovely Trail Run trails! Trail running is running on nature trails and is among the best of things for the soul. These trails are very tough and really challenging. CYCLING IN THE MOUNTAINS

There are many nice bike paths both in the mountains and in the woods, for hard training or a relaxing trip with the family. A bicycle wash is available at the campground. There are nice trails nearby and if you want to go further, there are 10 kilometre-long bike trails in Rörbäcksnäs. KLÄPPEN: WINTER IN SÄLEN 2020- 2021 79
