What is the significance of Single-Family Neighborhoods?

I assume from the beginning, when communities mapped out areas to separate business areas from housing developments, etc., the single-family designation was created for areas devoted to individual residences for individual families.

The days of allowing someone to build a hog-rendering plant next to homes is no longer allowed — or is it, “unless you know someone”?

Let’s be honest: If a Single Family designated area allows daily rentals to numerous individuals, the communities should be reclassified as “Transient Housing”! Local elected officials, try that on for size leading up to your next election and check out the reaction at the ballot box!

Floridians, do not sit on your haunches and let this crap get by you — write Governor DeSantis and your local politicians and if any of them support allowing transient housing in your single family neighborhood, vote them OUT!

A property owner has the inherent right to rent out their property, but it should not be for less than six months.

There are other more densely populated zoning designations, but Single Family should mean just that: a single-family home, not transient, short-term rental.

Do not leave it to your politicians to dictate that you have to permit a revolving, daily, unlimited number of transients into your

neighborhood or worse yet, next door! This is 2024 and that transient next door could be from anywhere and be a member of a sleeper cell for the attack that could happen — it only took 19 for the World Trade Center attack!

NO to pet stores, YES to soft blankets

Dear Editor:

Authorities reportedly rescued hundreds of neglected dogs from three separate mass-breeding operations in Northeast Florida in March.

Animals in mass-breeding mills suffer so breeders can make a buck. They exist — it can’t be called “living” — in cramped cages with wire floors encrusted in feces. They’re often forced to eat moldy food and drink slimy water. They are sick, injured, and frightened. Most will never hear a kind word, feel a gentle touch, or rest on a soft blanket.

As long as people keep buying animals from pet stores, breeders, classified ads, and online, animals will keep suffering in these miserable mills, and animals in shelters and struggling to survive on the streets will lose out on homes.

Don’t fuel this cruel industry. Always adopt animals from shelters, rather than purchasing them from breeders or pet stores. And please, spay and neuter your animal companions and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

Central Florida advocates seek Medicaid expansion, Orange County public school teachers and sta approve new contract, Disney v. DeSantis drags on and other news you may have missed.

» Central Florida advocates uplift effort to expand Medicaid in Florida

Hundreds of thousands of Floridians without health insurance today are caught in what’s known as a Medicaid coverage gap: Their incomes are too high for them to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to qualify for federal subsidies to help them afford private insurance. This is because Florida is one of just 10 states — most Southern, most Republican-controlled — that have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Doing so would expand coverage eligibility to adults 18 to 64 whose annual incomes are at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level. In 2024, that is just $20,782. A statewide effort is underway to close the so-called Medicaid coverage gap. Advocates in Central Florida gathered last week outside of the Agency for Health Care Administration building in Orlando to uplift the need for Medicaid expansion — not only as a net good for the working-class adults and families it would directly benefit, but for the state’s rural hospitals and communities as a whole. Research shows a ripple effect of economic benefits associated with expansion. For example, a 2023 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed lower rates of evictions in counties that expanded Medicaid coverage.

» Orange County teachers, school staff approve new union contract

After a months-long process of negotiating over pay and health insurance costs, teachers and other school staff in the Orange County public school system have voted nearly unanimously to approve a new union contract with the school district, delivering “historic” 10% raises. According to the Orange County CTA — a union representing roughly 14,000 school teachers, school psychologists, librarians and other staff in Orange County Public Schools — union members approved their new contract in a 99.5% vote of approval. Staff represented by the union should see that pay boost (and retroactive pay) show up on their paychecks this week. The cost of living in Orange County, and Orlando in particular, soared during the pandemic, leaving many locals working what were once considered solidly middle-class jobs at risk of being priced out of the area. Under the new agreement, starting teacher pay will rise from $48,400 to $49,375 annually, with additional supplements for staff with advanced degrees. One of the most contentious issues during negotiations — a proposed hike to health plan premiums — was settled last month, largely in the union’s favor. The rate hike will be delayed in part until September, with another hike expected to come the next school year. The union says they and the district will continue talks on solutions to help keep health plans affordable for teachers.

» Disney asks for delay from appeals court in legal battle with DeSantis

After reaching a settlement last month in a related state-court case, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts last Friday asked a federal appeals court for a delay in a legal battle against Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. Disney went to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor in January dismissed a lawsuit alleging that the state unconstitutionally retaliated against the company because of its opposition to a controversial education law. But in the filing last week, Disney asked for a 60-day extension in submitting an opening brief to “facilitate” negotiations. It said such negotiations were contemplated in a settlement that Disney reached last month with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District in a state-court case in Orange County. The lawsuits were rooted in a decision last year by DeSantis and the Republicancontrolled Legislature to replace the former Reedy Creek Improvement District with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. In the federal lawsuit, Disney has alleged retaliation because it made a public statement opposing a 2022 law that restricted instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. The settlement in the Orange County case included issues related to development agreements that Disney reached with the Reedy Creek Improvement District board before the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board took over. The filing Friday said Disney’s opening brief is due April 17 at the Atlanta-based appeals court. Disney is seeking to push back the deadline to June 17.

» Pressure builds for DeSantis to veto bill that would block local mandates on workplace heat protection measures

The pressure is on for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to veto a controversial bill that would prevent city and county governments from establishing workplace heat protection requirements for employers. He’s unlikely to do so, but over 90 labor, social advocacy and faith groups — including a church in

DeSantis’ hometown of Dunedin — have signed on to letters asking him to trash it. If signed into law, the bill would block local governments from requiring employers to offer any workplace heat protection measures (e.g. water breaks, shaded areas). No city or county currently has such a policy in place, but the idea was most definitely inspired by a local effort in Miami-Dade. Johana Lopez, an agricultural worker in Apopka, described the bill as an “injustice.” Over 2 million people in Florida’s workforce labor outdoors fixing roads, climbing power lines, gathering produce, building homes, and performing many other jobs essential to communities. While the federal government set guidelines for employers to keep workers safe, there’s no federal or state standard in Florida on protecting them from heat. The GOP-sponsored bill, however, was backed by the Florida Chamber of Commerce (a mega business lobbying group with deep pockets and influence with politicians in both major parties). DeSantis received the bill last week and has a limited amount of time to either sign it into law or veto it.

» DeSantis signs bill banning state money from going to local public transit advertising

Gov. Ron DeSantis last week signed a wide-ranging transportation package that includes prohibiting state money from going into local public-transit advertising. The law (HB 1301), effective July 1, says Department of Transportation funds can’t be used for marketing or advertising activities on buses or other vehicles operated by public-transit agencies. “Such vehicles are limited to displaying a brand or logo of the public transit provider, the official seal of the jurisdictional governmental entity, or a state agency public service announcement,” a legislative analysis of the bill said. The law also will change the way the Department of Transportation secretary is chosen, and directs the Florida Rail Enterprise to include among its duties the acquisition of “future rail corridors and rights-of-way in coordination with FDOT’s planning of the state highway system.” A Senate version of the bill initially sought a 44-foot-wide rail corridor in the Interstate 4 right-of-way to extend the private Brightline passenger rail service from Orlando to Tampa.

What the Florida Supreme Court abortion rulings mean for voters

The court approved a six-week ban, but will also give voters a chance to ensure access to abortion with ballot amendment in November

The Florida Supreme Court released two blockbuster rulings on abortion rights on last week — one that within a few weeks will allow a ban on the procedure after six weeks’ gestation to take effect, and another allowing the voters to decide in November whether to amend the Florida Constitution to protect access to the procedure.

In the first ruling, the court voted to overrule its 1989 precedent holding that the Florida Constitution’s Privacy Clause protects the right to abortion. That protection was among the strongest for the procedure in the country, going beyond what the U.S. Supreme Court allowed in its 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

The court’s majority noted that the six-week ban, which the Legislature adopted last year, was

contingent on one of four things happening: that the court overturned its privacy protection for abortion; that it uphold the ban after 15 weeks’ gestation that the Legislature imposed in 2022; that a state constitutional amendment clarify that the Privacy Clause does not protect the procedure; or that the court recede from others of its earlier rulings protecting abortion rights.

“Today’s decision implicates three of these four events, meaning that the act’s six-week ban will take effect in thirty days,” Justice Jamie Grosshans wrote.

Only Justice Jorge Labarga dissented.

Ballot language

However, in a 4-3 ruling the majority found that the proposed ballot language describing the

change under one banner. The court heard oral arguments on Feb. 7.

The Legislature passed a 15-week abortion ban after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe. The next year, the Legislature approved a six-week ban that would take effect 30 days after the court issued any ruling overturning its 1989 abortion precedent.

Last Monday’s ruling did just that. That would have the six-week ban taking effect in early May. At six weeks, abortion-rights advocates point out, many patients wouldn’t realize they are pregnant.

As for the initiative, Attorney General Ashley Moody argued against it, as did anti-abortion groups including Liberty Counsel, Florida Voters Against Extremism and Susan B. Anthony ProLife America, insisting that the ballot language was too ambiguous.

Moody filed a brief suggesting that the amendment would give health care providers the power to decide both what constitutes “viability” of a pregnancy and whether the “health” of the pregnant person justified a late-term abortion without disclosing that to voters. “In essence,” providers would be “serving as their own regulators,” it asserts.

Politics

Both rulings could provide a powerful inducement for abortion-rights advocates to vote on a ballot that will include the presidential contest between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, plus local and state legislative seats.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed both restrictions into law as he was planning his run for president in what was widely seen as a bid for conservative support. He had no immediate response to the rulings.

Moody did remark on X, formerly Twitter, both regarding the abortion amendment and another initiative to allow adult recreational use of cannabis.

“We appreciate the court revisiting its precedent on Florida’s right to privacy and returning the meaning of that amendment to the voters’ original intention,” Moody wrote.

Floridians Protecting Freedom, organized following the Dodd v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling overturning Roe in 2022, collected close to 1 million petition signatures to place the “Amendment to Limit Government Interference With Abortion” on the ballot. Citizens’ initiatives need at least 60 percent of the votes cast to pass.

However, we respect the court’s decisions,” she concluded.

The Florida Democratic Party issued a statement attempting to link U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican up for reelection this year, to abortion restrictions.

“Rick Scott can’t run from his record on abortion. This is one of the strictest bans in the country, which eliminates access to reproductive health care before most women know they’re pregnant,” the party said.

“Rick Scott’s years-long mission to restrict reproductive freedom is at odds with over 60 percent of Floridians, and his recent attacks on

in vitro fertilization (IVF) and medication abortion certainly haven’t helped,” it continued.

Abortion ban merits

The 1989 decision was handed down by a more liberal court than is sitting now; DeSantis has since filled its ranks with ardent conservatives. It turned on the court’s interpretation of the Privacy Clause the voters approved in 1980, stipulating that “every natural person has the right to be let alone and free from governmental intrusion into the person’s private life except as otherwise provided herein.”

The court back then concluded that “[f]ew decisions are more personal and intimate, more properly private, or more basic to individual dignity and autonomy, than a woman’s decision … whether to end her pregnancy.”

But the present majority found fault with that on a number of grounds, including that the 1989 court didn’t rely on textualist or originalist principles of conservative jurisprudence, which didn’t predominate in those days in the way they do now.

Instead, the majority undertook to discern what the voters in 1980 might have understood the clause to mean, and decided it wasn’t clear they applied it to abortion rights. In other words, the “In re T.W.” ruling was “clearly erroneous.” In part, the majority argued that the involvement of health-care professionals renders abortion decisions less than individually private.

In his dissent, Labarga lamented that the majority ignored reams of news coverage and legal rulings in Florida substantiating that the voters

in 1980 understood that the privacy right would extend to the right to terminate a pregnancy.

“I lament that what the majority has done today supplants Florida voters’ understanding — then and now — that the right of privacy includes the right to an abortion. The majority concludes that the public understanding of the right of privacy did not encompass the right to an abortion. However, the dominance of Roe in the public discourse makes it inconceivable that in 1980, Florida voters did not associate abortion with the right of privacy,” Labarga wrote.

More on the amendment

The text of the amendment says: “Limiting government interference with abortion. — Except as provided in Article X, Section 22, no law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.”

(The cited provision allows the Legislature to require parental notification before a minor undergoes an abortion with the option of allowing the child to ask a judge for permission instead.)

The summary reads: “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider. This amendment does not change the Legislature’s constitutional authority to require notification to a parent or guardian before a minor has an abortion.”

Floridians Protecting Freedom insisted the meaning of “viability” has been well understood

“Florida’s six-week ban goes against the will of Floridians across the political spectrum. Now it’s up to us, as advocates and citizens, to ensure our personal medical decisions are ours and ours alone to make,” League of Women Voters of Florida co-president Cecile M. Scoon said in her own written statement.

Andrew Shirvell, head of Florida Voice for the Unborn, saw the rulings as a compromise by the justices.

“One cannot ‘compromise’ with evil — and the abortion industry is pure evil,” he said in a written statement.

“Today’s ‘compromise’ decisions are simply unacceptable when five of the current seven sitting justices on the court were appointed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Clearly, grassroots pro-life advocates have been misled by elements within the ‘pro-life, pro-family establishment’ because Florida’s highest court has now revealed itself to be a paper tiger when it comes to standing-up to the murderous abortion industry.”

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America state policy director Katie Daniel of Tampa issued a statement:

since Roe came down in 1973, and that the court doesn’t generally require ballot language to explore the broad range of federal law, given the limit on its length.

The majority dismissed concerns raised by Moody and her organizational allies.

“That the proposed amendment’s principal goal and chief purpose is to limit government interference with abortion is plainly stated in terms that clearly and unambiguously reflect the text of the proposed amendment. And the broad sweep of this proposed amendment is obvious in the language of the summary. Denying this requires a flight from reality,” the opinion reads.

More reaction

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“The Florida Supreme Court was right to let the ballot initiative go before voters — and it’s a good thing they did, because voters will need to head to the polls to undo the damage the court is causing with its decision to allow an extreme ban on abortion to go into effect,” Timmaraju said in a written statement.

“This is devastating news for access to abortion care in the state and the entire South. It has never been more essential that the right to abortion be enshrined in the state constitution to protect access for Floridians and that we elect federal champions to protect the right to abortion at the national level. We’re committed to working beside our partners on the ground to ensure that happens,” Timmaraju added.

“Today’s victory for unborn children who have a heartbeat and can feel pain is in line with the views of the majority of Floridians who want to protect babies and serve mothers and families. As Florida faces what may be its biggest ballot fight yet, Gov. Ron DeSantis must be at the forefront of protecting Florida from Big Abortion’s attempt to eliminate the rights of unborn children, parents, women, and girls.”

Florida House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell said in a statement:

“Because of extremist politicians, the young women of Florida today have fewer freedoms than their mothers and grandmothers. In 30 days, Florida will ban abortions after six weeks. That’s before many women even know they’re pregnant, and before a lot of tests for fetal health and viability can be done.

“Out-of-touch politicians have spoken loud and clear: They think they know better than us and they should control our personal freedoms. They want to make personal health care decisions for us that they have no business making. They don’t care what we want. They don’t care what our doctors say we need. They don’t care about what’s right for our faith or our families. They don’t care that the majority of Floridians want to secure and protect access to safe, legal abortions …

“This ruling shows how critical it is that Floridians pass Amendment 4 this November, because it will protect abortion access in Florida’s constitution. An overwhelming majority of Floridians already think we should all have the freedom to make our own health care decisions. We must take the power away from out-of-touch extremist politicians and claim our rights ourselves come November.”

In the last few years, I’ve written a depressing number of columns bidding farewell to Central Floridan artists who have departed our state seeking bluer pastures. So I’m always delighted for the opportunity to reconnect with an old friend who has found success in the big city, yet still remembers their roots. It’s been well over a decade since dancer-choreographer Clymene Aldinger left Orlando for New York City, where she performed as a principal dancer with the acclaimed Elisa Monte Dance before founding the nonprofit Clymove Dance in 2019. On April 2, her company held their 2024 gala at the prestigious Ailey Citigroup Theater, where they debuted the latest in her long line of collaborations with veteran local DJ Nigel John, as his stage alias Kurt Rambus. I recently caught up with the pair — whom I’ve known since they first met in 2009 through my wife’s company, Voci Dance — to hear why and how they’ve maintained their productive long-distance partnership.

“Being in Orlando and being with Voci was kind of a saving grace for me, because I had done the New York thing and it was pretty stressful,” Aldinger recalls of her arrival here in the aughts, after training at NYC’s Fordham University. “It was a lot to take in as a young person, and I needed a mental health check and emotional [and] physical break from that life.” While pursuing her master’s degree in mental health counseling at Rollins, she began dancing with Voci, which she says “was perfect for me, because it was more about the inspiration and the development of character, and just your whole self — your real

self, whatever that is, it doesn’t matter what it looks like. … I just got to investigate a lot of different things … there was a lightness to it, but it was also depth-oriented at the same time.”

During this “magical time,” she first met John, who was contributing music to a Voci production. “His music is ultimately what we connected over, and his collaboration with dance was what I was inspired by, so when I needed a new composer he was in my mind just a perfect fit,” says Aldinger.

“I was originally attracted to his music because, while I am a classically trained dancer, there is a darkness to me; there is a funkiness, a soulfulness and he seems like a kindred spirit, in that we’re both sort of paradoxical,” says Aldinger.“It’s dark, and yet it’s upbeat; it’s depth-oriented, but then it’s funky and fun; it’s like being at a party, but also you’re thinking about really deep things.”

For his part, John — who is studying cognitive neuroscience at UCF when not dropping beats — explains that he and Aldinger were drawn to work together because they are both “unconventional,” adding, “That’s where we fit. We kind of like to experiment; she experiments, and I experiment.” Aldinger echoes that, saying, “When I’m inspired, I can say some pretty weird things and ideas, and he’s never been like, ‘What the F are you talking about?’”

Aldinger creates all her postmodern choreography without any music at all, and then sends Rambus suggestions of sonic inspirations that he turns into an original soundtrack. On their first collaboration, Rambus remembers Aldinger referencing a Big Boi song and asking for something “that BPM, that speed, that kind of vibe. So I listened to it, and then I kind of did my own thing.” Since then, he says, they’ve developed a routine of working back and forth over the internet.

Aldinger calls “Hips,” their eighth and newest joint piece, their “most collaborative yet.”

Rambus’ contributions haven’t gone unnoticed by Clymove’s audiences, according to Aldinger, who reports that “at every show someone asked me like, ‘Where’s the vinyl? Where can I get the record?’” And she’s looking forward to this Orlando connection continuing, saying, “I’m not going to mess with something that isn’t broken. It’s literally perfect for what I’m trying to achieve.”

Although she recalls her move back to New York as being “really, really, really hard, because I had found a life in Florida,” Aldinger was able to achieve her dream of dancing professionally until her retirement in 2017. Today, she’s focused on being her company’s artistic director, which she calls “really stress-inducing [and] anxiety-provoking.” She credits her delegation skills for her success: “When I was a dancer, I had to do everything I did. [Now] I’m able to listen to other people’s advice, and rely on my board, and follow those who’ve done it before me.”

Manhattan may seem a world away from Orlando’s comparatively minuscule market, but Aldinger has some advice for fellow artists that rings true regardless of their city’s size.“You need to find your angel investors, and there’s really no other way to get started without money. You rely initially on your donors and patrons and sponsors,” she says.“Fundraising is the only thing that saves art. Ticket sales are the lowest hierarchy of where you make your money. Everything comes from people actually caring and giving their money over for a good cause.”

Many artists in the area may dream of escaping to NYC, but Aldinger isn’t closing the book on her life here by a long shot. “I love Orlando, and in fact, when my husband and I discussed where we move when we’re done with New York, that’s one of my top votes,” she says.“I’m always gonna have a spot in my heart for Orlando.”

All-halal burger joint serves all-American classics with unique flavor combos

ou guys are going to a male revue?”

The quip came after I told a droll neighbor that the dining pal and I are off to a place called Beef N’ Buns.

“It’s a burger joint there, Channing Tatum, not a strip joint,” I said as we peeled out of the driveway in a flash with the top down, and that’s the naked truth.

I’d been hearing about a “Karachi burger” being served there, and it was reason enough to make a trip down John Young Parkway just past Whisper Lakes Boulevard. It’s not until we got there that we realized the space was recently home to Heart of Jerusalem and its Middle Eastern soul food. And it’s not until we entered that we realized the heart of Jerusalem continues to beat on, thanks to a trio of Palestinians behind the operation — 19-year-old chef Fares Faila and a couple of 20-something brothers, Muhammad and Aziz Baker, who happen to be Faila’s cousins.

Along with a little help from Beirut Grill & Deli/Beirut Bakery & Deli owner Riad Elkhatib, the trio have been sizzling some of the finest burgers money can buy in the south lands of Orlando. Their secret: halal, grass-fed, hand-slaughtered beef.

“Hand-slaughtered meat tastes better than machine-slaughtered,” says the woman standing in line in front of us. It’s a contentious claim, but to the throngs who gather here, including a sizable contingent of Orlando’s Muslim community, eating is believing.

Faila, who went to culinary school in Sarasota and competed in the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition in 2023, took time perfecting his smashburger recipe with help from Aziz. “When I first made my smashburger, Aziz was like Yo! This burger needs work! So we tweaked it together until we were both happy with it.”

meat on a flattop — every one of the burgers we sampled held patties that were crisped around the edges.

In the case of the Premium Prime ($11.95), the crisp rounds came slathered in American and mozzarella cheese as well as “prime sauce” — a garlic aioli infused with jalapeños, vinegar and brown sugar. Requisite additions of red onion, lettuce and tomato lent the burger a classic feel, particularly the brioche bun in all its squishy, glossy glory. In fact, this Magic Mike of hamburger buns is procured from the same company supplying McDonald’s with their sesame seed buns — Turano Baking Co. just off South Orange Avenue near the 417 — and I’m lovin’ it.

The Funguy Smash ($11.95) was funghi-fresh with portobellos and Swiss cheese, but, who am I kidding, we came to Beef N’ Buns for the Karachi Fire ($11.95), and fire it was. Faila makes a cashew sauce then blends in chipotle peppers for his signature “cashew fire” sauce that goes into the burger joint’s popular menu item.“We get people driving here from Sanford every day to eat it,” says Elkhatib.

And it’s true, the place is packed on this Ramadan evening with scores breaking fast with one of these most all-Americans of eats. Of course, I could always do with more heat, but the burger was a standout nevertheless. As good as the chapli kebab burger at Charcoal Zyka just up the road? Hmm, not quite, but this certainly won’t be the last time I scarf BNB’s edible ode to Pakistan. I should say that while you can eat these burgers with two hands, one hand is really all that’s required. Big, overflowing messes these are not.

Burgers aside, there are also chicken sandwiches offered here, none better than the Mango Habañero ($11.99). Faila soaks the clucker in buttermilk for two days before hand-battering it and frying it in peanut oil. The pal couldn’t get enough of it and declared it “cock-block-worthy.”

Then there are sides like superb onion rings ($6.99) that are pre-made, but were crisp and had a clean flavor nonetheless. Even better were the fries. Of the three we sampled, including truffle aioli fries ($5.99) with fresh grated Parmesan, a tres piquant Cajun variant ($3.99) and sweet potato shoestrings ($5.99), we agreed we’d get all three again. Same goes for the jalapeño jam ($0.49) and its sweet slap of heat. More menu items are in the works, including milkshakes and more burgers, but Beef N’ Buns is ready for its closeup now, and it sure as hell teases like the best of the old OBT strip. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Meanwhile, everybody in this country knows MTG planted that pipe bomb, and we can’t even nail her for jaywalking. (Hulu)

The Challenge: All Stars — Twenty-four contestants converge on Cape Town, South Africa, for Season 4, with the lineup including some legendary players who haven’t been seen on the show for two decades. By this point, their biggest challenge should be lowering their A1C. (Paramount+)

The Hijacking of Flight 601 — Six scripted episodes dramatize the true-life story of a 1973 terrorist action that resulted in the longest-lasting appropriation of an aircraft in Latin-American history. It only ended when the hijackers found out the plane was a Boeing and immediately turned themselves in. (Netflix)

Unlocked: A Jail Experiment — Learn what happened when Arkansas sheri Eric Higgins experimented with a bold new approach to incarceration that gave felons unprecedented freedom to move about the grounds. Baby Reindeer — Performer Richard Gadd has now wrung an entire seven-episode series out of the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe show in which he recalled being stalked by an unhinged woman. How many more media does he have to tell the story in before we get to ask who’s really the stalker here? (Netflix)

Midsummer Night — A cast of Swedes and Norwegians depicts the panic that erupts when a long-married couple chooses to divulge a shocking secret in the midst of a party that’s being held on the longest day of the year. SPOILERS: The secret is that they’re making everybody watch Rebel Moon, and it only seems like the longest day of the year. (Netflix)

ALL THAT GLITTERS

Hard-touring glam-rocker Scott Yoder returns to Orlando — this time with a full band

This week marks the third time that glam-folk phantom Scott Yoder has played the City Beautiful within the last 12 months.

The last two gigs saw Yoder flying solo; this time he’s bringing a reconstituted version of his backing band of diamond dogs. You see, Scott Yoder is a one-off in the annals of glam-rock a hybrid of high-glitter à la Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars welded to the work ethic of a particularly ripe folk-punk troubadour. It’s a jarring juxtaposition when you encounter Yoder live the first time — as we did on a weeknight at Uncle Lou’s, with Yoder clad in a cape singing into a telephone receiver, looking more like he was beamed in from a utopian world of Jobriaths — but he loves this way of living his musical life. For Yoder, traveling and being on a stage, any stage, is where life makes most sense.

“It’s the most natural spot for me to be,” says Yoder. “It’s more relaxing to me than going to the grocery store or, you know, having any dayto-day things to do.”

Yoder credits a stint touring as the backing and opening band at the tender age of 20 for Moldy Peaches eccentric and road warrior Kimya Dawson as being pivotal to shaping his work ethic.

“I took a lot from her work ethic and it’s really just in my bones at this point,” reflects Yoder. “Really being dedicated to the music and connecting with people and not being too aloof or too holier-than-thou. She’s a very down-to-earth person and that served as a huge example to me.”

Speaking of backing bands, Yoder is — as mentioned before — back on the road with a full band. And as enthralling as those solo shows were, you can tell Yoder is happy to have creative comrades along with him.

This time it’s Dave Harvey on drums — also from Nudity and the seminal Behead the Prophet NLSL, and producer of some past Yoder recordings — newcomer bassist Michael Trew, and longtime creative foil Fiona Moonchild.

Besides being a formidable synth-pop artist in her own right, Moonchild ably fills the Mick Ronson role to Yoder’s Bowie, right down to Yoder supplicating in front of Moonchild as she shreds away during shows. Their creative telepathy is apparent.

“It really just stems from our friendship and how compatible we are, down to our shared interest in things like tinned fish and going on little pointless missions,” says Yoder. “We can just shoot the shit for however long, and that’s what you need in a long-term partner who’s going to be in a van with you for multiple continents and multiple months.”

Though he enjoyed his stint as a solo artist,

Yoder feels more musically complete playing as part of a band.

“I’m a fundamentally collaborative performer. I’ve learned how to play instruments while playing alongside other people,” says Yoder. “For me, doing the solo tours was a chance to experiment with myself and push myself away from that comfortable, familiar territory. I was more interested in collaborating with, interacting with and even confronting the audience as much as I could. That was really fun for me. But I love mixing it up with this band and having the different dynamics and different musical sensibilities bounce off each other and see how songs can develop that way.”

And what a collaboration it is. The singer and band hit the stage with makeup like warpaint, accentuated by pulsing lights and fog machines, duly romping and stomping through a set of strangely familiar glammy anthems led by a ghostly, bedazzled Yoder. This is a band that leaves it all on the stage. (We suddenly remember Yoder playing the outdoor patio at Stonewall during a frigid winter night and swinging from the stage rafters.) There’s usually even a tender unplugged part of the set, summoning up visions of Marc Bolan frozen at that crucial crossroads of pixie-folk and Electric Warrior.

“I treat the stage as if is a ritual. … If you’re up on a stage, if you’re performing for people, you have to do the most that you think you can do with that opportunity,” says Yoder.

“It doesn’t matter what the size is. It’s incumbent upon you as a performer to fully realize your creative vision in that venue. I feel like a big part of why people want to go out and see live music in person is that they want to be transported somewhere. They want to have an escape. I know I do.”

And though it’s tempting for hacks (including this one!) to imbue Yoder with Thin White Duke mystique while filing column inches, Yoder goes out of his way to puncture it, to keep things DIY and human-scale outside of that makeup-smeared hour on the stage.

“I’m not a super glamorous person day to day. I like to eat some peanut butter out of the jar while waiting for the gas to pump and then get some drip coffee and take the dog for a walk,” demurs Yoder. “That’s the regular kind of thing.”

Rest assured, however, that Scott Yoder will not be eating peanut butter out of a jar in public at Will’s Pub come Wednesday.

LOCAL RELEASES

Orlando rock warhorse Steve Garron — whose local influence fronting notable bands like Precious and Potsie goes all the way back to the 1990s — last emerged with latest act Steve Garron & the Guarantees’ 2021 EP, Black Box Recorder EP. Now, at long last, the alt-rock band are finally back with brand-new 7-inch single “Tupac and Kurt Cobain.”

Although Garron’s still backed by the same group of credentialed Orlando players as before (bassist Justin Martin, guitarist Wheeler Newman and drummer Chris LeBrane), they’re now going by the more streamlined name of simply The Guarantees. On the new two-sided single, the formula that robes Garron’s distinctive neo-glam vocals in guitar grandeur has especially melodic leanings.

On the titular A-side, Garron’s famously wry musing is a skewering of rock & roll’s romanticization of dead young idols. Meanwhile, B-side track “Favorite Little Heartbeat” is a tender, sonorous love song that swoons with heart and drama. Because it’s Steve Garron we’re dealing with, the song is about his cat.

Released on April 5 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, the two-song release is a solid refresher of Garron’s affecting irreverence. “Tupac and Kurt Cobain” b/w “Favorite Little Heartbeat” is a Bandcamp exclusive that’s available both digitally and on vinyl. Madison McFerrin: Nearly everyone who lived through the smothering pop-cultural domination of 1988 smash hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” has sworn off Bobby McFerrin for their own sanity. It’s an unfair historical circumstance because the man is a wildly virtuosic and innovative vocalist. But still, even nearly four decades on, any

suggestion of that unshakable earworm can still induce a shiver. How do you even slough off that kind of baggage? In Madison McFerrin’s case, she immediately squashes comparisons to her father with a voice that is both cutting-edge original and utterly her own. Her future R&B sound shoots for the outer limits on otherworldly frequencies that can range from Little Dragon-esque grooves to space-age soul. She may be her father’s daughter but, with her bold and tasteful vision, she’s unmistakably her own woman. (5 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, Judson’s Live, $22)

Julia Wolf, Scro: NYC pop chameleon Julia Wolf is doing everything that all of today’s hottest young stars are doing, only she’s doing it better. Musically, her sound’s got all the hallmarks that are de rigueur right now, except she’s sticking it with a precision that few can match. And while everyone’s sporting hip-hop swag these days, Wolf wears it with the kind of natural assurance that reveals her peers as the poseurs they are. It all adds up to the kind of rare star who doesn’t just play the modern pop game but elevates it. (7 p.m. Monday, April 15, The Social, $15)

Beach Fossils, Nation of Language: For nearly 15 years, Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils have proven an indie-rock mainstay. But in recent years, opener Nation of Language have rocketed skyward to become one of today’s hottest indie names, with a perfected sound that shades a minimalist synth-pop aesthetic with modern post-punk mood. They’re bright young disciples of OMD’s early groundbreaking work who carry that torch as proudly as if Pretty in Pink never even happened. The Florida Film Festival returns for a “blockbuster” 33rd year, with a slate of adventurous cinema and special events taking over Maitland’s Enzian Theater as well as some screens at Winter Park Village’s Regal Cinemas. The fest’s theme this year is “A Road Trip for Yer Mind,” and FFF organizers are presenting more than 170 di erent films from 41 countries around the world. The big-ticket events include a screening of the wonderfully gay dark comedy But I’m a Cheerleader, with stars Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne in the actual house. With Lyonne in the midst of her 99th career renaissance on the back of a starring role in Poker Face, this is a very cool highlight of the Fest. Also, the timeless Monty Python and the Holy Grail gets a screening with Python John Cleese in attendance. (Buckle up! He has some surely lukewarm takes on “cancel culture”!) Other highlights include oddball music doc Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story; the world premiere of comedy Lady Parts, about a woman who has to move back with her parents to recover from surgery on her vagina; and the Donn of Tiki documentary premiere, complete with folks from Don the Beachcomber coming out to sling original Donn tiki liquid-gold at Eden Bar. Start those Promposals now — Come Out With Pride is hosting 2024’s Pride Prom at the Orlando Science Center on Friday. Pride Prom is an event for LGBTQIA folks over the age of 21. The theme of the event, fittingly, is “Be Your Brightest Self,” encouraging attendees to dress in

neon colors and glow-in-the-dark finery. The evening features music by DJ Blue Star and live entertainment by Raspberry Pie as well as classic prom activities like the crowning of the Royal Court, handled by Sondra Rae from Johnny’s House on XL106.7 and Pride Radio. Guests can take pictures in a photobooth presented by Firefly or hang out by the food table featuring snacks by Cuisiniers Catering or free frozen custard from Shake Shack. Orlando’s top spots for all things brunch and bubbly collide in Lake Eola Park this weekend for Brunch in the Park. Amendment 4 Rally

Reproductive rights advocates rally in Orlando this weekend in support of a ballot measure that would put the right to an abortion in the Florida state Constitution, where politicians can’t mess with it (as easily). Mere days ago, the Florida Supreme Court approved the measure, spearheaded by a coalition of organizations called Floridians Protecting Freedom, for placement on the 2024 ballot. This proposed Amendment 4 would need support from at least 60% of Florida voters in November in order to pass. A November poll conducted by the University of North Florida found 62% of registered Florida voters in support of the proposal — including 53% of polled Republicans. “The fact that we only launched our campaign eight months ago and we’ve already reached our petition goal speaks to the unprecedented support and momentum there is to get politicians out of our private lives and health care decisions,” said Campaign Director Lauren Brenzel of FPF. Florida Groves Music Festival, a fest celebrating “music, art and freedom,” returns to Orlando for a third go-’round. This year’s headliners are Milky Chance and Michael Franti & Spearhead and Atmosphere. Minneapolis outsider hip-hop lifers Atmosphere are worth noting as a can’t-miss performance; the duo of Ant and Slug haven’t performed in Orlando for a few years, and even have some new music in the form of mini-album Talk Talk to share. Many years ago, with a lack of available resources, this resulted in a poor prognosis for these dogs, with few people willing to take them in. Now, thanks to our heartworm sponsorship program, we cover the treatment costs for all adopted and rescued dogs. To celebrate our heartworm disease sponsorship program and bring awareness to heartworm disease, we are reducing adoption fees for these dogs to $30 for the month of April.
