Martin's Air Charter Douglas C-47A Skytrain / DC-3 PH-DDZ "Doornroosje" Livery designed for VSKYLABS DC-3

Douglas C-47A with c/n 19754, entered United States Army Air Force service with serial 43-15288. Unfortunately the books of her active military live are lost, so not much info is known. Only that she flew for the USAAF/USAF unit 1961 and went to Arizona to be stored in the Military Aircraft Storage and Deposition Center in Arizona, now known as AMARC (Aircraft Maintenance And Regeneration Center).

In 1964 she came out of storage to be used by the (Federal Aviation Administration) she had registration N1616 appointed during her time with the FAA. After just a few months, on May 22, 1964 she changed ownership to Somali Airlines and she once again met the desert this time in the Somali Capital Mogadishu with registration 6OS-AAA. She was given a new serial in May 1970 as 6O-AAA (the new international standard for civilian aircraft became a two digit prefix for every country).

She was sold to ATC Incorporated, Nevada, USA in 1980 but although being registered as N920, never arrived there but ended up at Malta International Airport, Luqa in 1981. She was then sold to Egypt to become a workhorse for Pyramid Airlines and being used as transport for the oil industry.

On Friday May 13 1987 the Dutch Dakota Association (now DDA Classic Airlines) became her new owners and the PH-DDZ as her new registration would be) was the second Dakota of the Association next to the PH-PBA. Although the first original plans saw her in storage until 2010 at the DDA hanger at Schiphol-East, restoration started almost immediately after her arrival in May of the same year.

Eventually the project, named Doornroosje (the sleeping Beauty), took twelve long years to finish. The PH-DDZ flew again for the first time on May 7 1999 as a newborn. She changed from a workhorse C-47 to a DC-3C in splendid state. A representative from Boeing joked that she was the last Dakota ever, was built in the Netherlands.

She now flies in the colours of MAC (Martin's Air Charter) the predecessor of the modern Martinair Airlines and is based at the DDA Classic Airlines hangar at Schiphol-East.
