Re: [WarMachine] So, I'm thinking about getting in.

Thank you! And yeah, Cryx is mostly a troops faction that relies on strong melee troops/solos and spell-slinging warcasters. You typically do have some arc nodes (most of our lights are arc nodes), and maybe one or two heavies, but that's about it. Your focus usually wants to go to spellcasting or camping for armor.

That's changed a bit recently with the addition of Aiakos, who is kind of a warcaster-type solo who can run a 'jack or two for you. It's pretty common to see him hiding behind a Kraken or supporting a Leviathan shooting from range.

Then there's Mortenebra, who is basically our warcaster who can do nothing BUT 'jacks and still be competitive. :)

Different topic: I'm trying my first local tournament on Jan 24. I'm still pretty worried about the clock. I can't seem to finish games without clocking myself out, though I'm usually pretty close. Just going to have to sigh and mark all the backs of my bases with my guy's MAT/POW, since I'm pretty sure I lose a lot of time looking that stuff up. :/ At least I have a white wet-erase marker to use, so that I don't need to paint over them once I get them memorized.

There's a Cryx caster who's competitive with a mostly-'jack army? Colour me interested.

Gotta say I love the look of the Legion of Everblight's stuff, too. Why are the evil factions always the pretty ones?

Most factions have a 'caster who is aimed at running a lot of 'jacks. Cryx has Master Necrotech Mortenebra. To put these in context, I have to explain that "Battlegroup" means the 'caster and any 'jacks that they are running and not other units in your army.

Her spells include Jump Start (models in battlegroup aren't knocked down or stationary anymore), Overrun (again targeting something in the battlegroup, offering free movement to a different battlegroup model when the target kills something), Spectral Steel (target warjack in battlegroup gains extra armor and the ability to move unhindered by terrain or concern of being hit by getting too close to enemy models and walking away), Terminal Velocity (the biggie - all warjacks in the battlegroup can do a bunch of stuff that normally takes focus without using any). Out of her six spells, four of them ONLY affect her own battlegroup. And two of them affect EVERY 'jack in her battlegroup, so it makes having a bunch of 'jacks more efficient.

Warcasters can also take "Theme" forces, which are basically a set of restrictions you can choose to undergo (only taking X type of models). The more strict the restrictions you put on yourself as defined by "Tiers" within the Theme, the more extra bonuses you get. There's four levels of Tiers. To reach her third tier, you have to take the restriction of taking only warjacks, taking two solos called Warwitch Sirens, and the only other thing you can take are a few other solos - no units at all. To reach her fourth tier level you HAVE to take four helljacks (the bigger types of warjacks). And if you reach Tier 3, your helljacks cost 1 point less.

Her lists are almost always in tier, and include something like 6-8 warjacks. The only real downside is that it's pretty much the only time you'll be taking 6-8 helljacks, so buying all of them for only one warcaster isn't something a newer player typically does. :)

Re: [WarMachine] So, I'm thinking about getting in.

Played two games today with Gaspy3. First game was against Karchev with a unit of Kayazy Assassins, a couple units of Eliminators, the Great Bears, Beast 09, Black Ivan, and another 'jack. Scenario was Incursion. I lost my bane riders on the top of two - I used them to charge some Kayazy Assassins and totally botched all my hit rolls. Then all five riders got murdered by the assassins. So that was a near-complete waste. The banes got pretty ripped up by the 'jacks. I did get a Dark Industries off on the non-character 'jack, and put down a Harrower, but it was really too late and he was able to keep control of 1-2 flags for the whole game. Tried a last-minute assassination on Karchev with Gaspy3 in melee but no dice.

Second game was against Nemo2 with a Stormwall, two Centurions (one on a JC), a Thunderhead, and a couple of Stormsmiths. Scenario was Incoming. I moved aggressively, getting everything upfield on turn one, and then by turn two I was at HIS side of both zones. I moved up so that he would either have to deal with my army or get charged by it, and popped feat. He decided to not worry about my feat, popped Nemo's feet, and proceeded to kill a bunch of my army while generating 13 (!) soul tokens for Gaspy3. Top of 3, already up by two points and sitting on both zones, I moved Gaspy within 8 inches of Nemo and proceeded to hit him with 5-6 Bone Shakers. A couple of them completely missed, even when I boosted to hit, but my last one was able to connect unboosted and the boosted damage finished him.

Painting up my Warwitch Siren:

Having a hard time deciding what color to paint the little tassel on her hat. The rest is metal, and going to be painted with the same scheme as the slayer above. I was thinking one of the cloth schemes I used would be a good idea to not go overboard with my color choices (I painted the leather on the model after this photo, black for larger areas like boots and the straps in reddish-brown). What do you guys think? :D

Huh, purple looks really good on Cryx, well done.

Thank you! It's a lot of effort and time, and I'm sure a really excellent painter could hit my standard in a quarter of the time, but I figure that's the only way I'll improve.

I don't think I did as well on this one, but I'm satisfied with it.
