Green Day unveil second song off upcoming album at When We Were Young festival

When We Were Young day 2 attendees were feeling no pain (aside from back pain) on Sunday night when headliners Green Day debuted the second song off their upcoming album during their closing set.

Billie Joe Armstrong and the rest of the punk rock band surprised fans with the live premiere of "Look Ma, No Brains" during their second headlining performance at the Las Vegas music festival — sorry to all Saturday attendees! It sounds like no time has passed on the rousing new song despite the more than three decades of history with this band, and the lyrics prove that Green Day haven't lost the angst that skyrocketed them to fame in the early '90s.

"Don't know much about history, cause I never learned how to read/Dropout, I'm a knucklehead, sick boy, I'mma s--- the bed," the song starts, while the chorus declares, "I said look ma, I ain't got no brains/I'm a goner and I don't feel no pain/I'm stupid and I'm all by myself/Cause I'm special and I don't need your help."

A few lucky fans were able to get early access to the song on a limited-edition vinyl sold at When We Were Young, featuring "Look Ma, No Brains" as well as "The American Dream Is Killing Me," which Armstrong called "the first song off our new album" during the band's intimate pop-up concert in Sin City on Thursday.

Both songs are currently unreleased but are expected to be included on the band's 14th studio album, which does not currently have a title or release date. Green Day have yet to share more details about the album and planned 2024 tour with Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas, although a flyer handed out at the Thursday show revealed that the tour will kick off in the U.S. and featured the following message to the U.K. and Europe: "You're next."

Representatives for the band declined to comment further.

During the Thursday night show, Green Day performed their hit album Dookie in full to celebrate its 30th anniversary. That pre-show served as the warm-up for the band ahead of both days of When We Were Young music festival, which they co-headlined with Blink-182.
