Jang Geun Suk Over the Years

Both Freesoul and I are a fan of Jang Geun Suk. We have seen quite few of his dramas and agree that he is one of the few people who can make it to the top.

We have seen him on-screen for years now, seen him grown from a cute kid to a hot guy over the years. My first introduction to him was back in 2004 when he was in Nonstop 4, playing a medstudent.

I loved his character in it, he was blunt, mean, funny, stubborn, and always after girls. The show was about bunch of college friends who struggle their way in life, with love, job, girls, college life and even through it all they have a memorable college life. They fought with each other, for each other, they cried, laugh, have fun and in between tried to catch up to their college assignments.

Jang Geun Suk was always seeing bickering with Yoon Ji in the show but eventually started falling for her and would get jealous if she were to meet another guy heh. That show was his first step towards success.

In between he did couple of movies and a drama but he was back in 2006 with ‘Hwang Jin-yi.’ Geun-suk’s performance in ‘Hwang Jin-yi’ did gain the attention of many female fans. He was a nobleman who falls for Hawng Jin Yi but their story ends in tragedy.

The following year in 2007, Geun-suk was casted in the rock music themed film ‘The Happy Life.’ His portrayal of Hyun-ju in ‘The Happy Life’ allowed Geun-suk to show off his masculine charms, as well as display his skills as a singer.

Jang Geun-suk would go on to play in two more music inspired titles in 2008, with the feature film ‘Doremifasolasido’ and the drama ‘Beethoven Virus as well as the historical drama Hong Gil Dong.

Based on the internet novel of the same title and written by Guiyeoni, Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Do is a touching love story with bittersweet elements. He plays a lead singer who’s best friend and girlfriend used to be good friends once upon a time but due to some tragedy they became bitter enemies.

He proved his acting skills once again in Hong Gil Dong where he plays a prince who seems cold from outside but as the plot develops we learn why he is the way he is. I loved his performance in this one. One of the best after his nonstop days! His intense scenes, raw emotions, the pain he hides, he love he can’t have, the freedom he is fighting for and the friendship – the only thing that kept him from going insane – ends tragically.  This drama showed how much he has grown over the years as an actor and as a person.

Then came a comedy – Baby and I. One of the best movies for me in 2008. He played the role of a messed up student, a bratty son, loyal friend, transforming from ungrateful and immature dad into loveable and responsible dad. His chemistry with the baby [Mason Moon] was amazing. He got his dues for the movie but baby Mason became the true star. He was praised for his looks [ he is half Canadian and half korean] and he became star in his own rights.

These two make great pair don’t they?

2009 came with You’re Beautiful which was spectacular to say the lest. His pout, the way he says Go Mi Nam, he expressions, emotions was just over the top. Even though it might not have done well in ratings but the drama was remarkable. I think all the actors were fabulous with their expressions, emotions, dialogues. This was one of the best dramas of ’09 and why wouldn’t it be, after all it was Hong sisters who were behind it.

His movie Itaewon Murder Case is based on a true story. His first negative role and he pulled off brilliantly. He was praised for his role and I must say it was not an easy one to play.

He did Mary Stayed Out All Night in 2010, which wasn’t that good for me. His character  seemed  too lazy/tried most of the time in the drama. He also didn’t seem to be as expressive and into the character. I think he could have done better job at it but then again everyone have ups and downs in life. The story was not that appealing nor were other actor. I think this is the one drama of his that I did not like.

He just released a movie this month – You’re Pet, which is a remake of Japanese version with the same title. I have heard the moving is doing pretty well, it got good ratings and reviews. I have seen the Japanese version of it and I loved it and  I can’t wait to see the Korean version. I am sure it will live up to my expectations.

Love Rain, which premise next year has me all excited! It is directed by Yoon Suk Ho, and who created the brand-name collection of melodramas “Autumn in My Heart” and “Winter Sonata, with Oh Soo Yun as a screenwriter who once again teamed up with Yoon Suk Ho after 10 years

In “Love Rain,” Jang Geun Suk plays double roles: a fine artist Seo In Ha who devotes his love to only one woman and free soul photographer Seo Joon. While Yoona will play two contrasting characters as well: an elegant college student Kim Yoon Hee from the 70s and an energetic young girl, living in the present day, Yu Ri.

Love Rain  will showcase the beautiful romance between a man and a woman from two different generations in a timeless manner

He is grown up to be a fine young actor over the years. He is full of passion when it comes acting and music. If given right script and role  he can become one of the top leading actors in South Korea. He is one of the very few actors who has the ability to get right in the sink of the character and that is one thing that can make or break an actor.
