The Graal Technique.

The late Simon Gate and Edward Hald, the famous and respected glass artists, developed the special and very complicated Graal technique at the Orrefors glassworks in 1917. The inspiration was Gallée glass.
The technique is complicated and requires a highly experienced master.
Lennart Nissmark prefers to use The Graal Technique for very thick and heavy pieces.
The first step in the Graal technique is to blow a clear crystal bubble, and at the same time a coloured one with one or more colours. The coloured bubble is turned inside-out over the clear bubble. The technique is called overlay.
When it is cold the artist can make the design. By different techniques as cutting, engraving, sand-blasting or etching, the design is made in relief through the layers of different colours.
The process continues by re-heating and then attaching the blowpipe casing it several times with new crystal, then blowing the right shape.

Discovery Graal.

The Discovery was made to give a strong impression of the outside, using the opaque colour while the holes in the colour to let the light of the soft interior colour shine throughout the piece
For me it starts a curiosity to look closer and examine the piece through the facetts and discover the different layers of the pattern reflecting in the bubble – hence the name Discovery.
