Yarram VIC

Yarram in VIC is a major service centre for coastal communities in Gippsland. It’s located south of the Strzelecki Ranges, east of Wilsons Promontory, and inland from the historic Port Albert.

The Beautiful Yarram Valley

‘The Yarram district is a beautiful valley, slightly elevated above sea-level. Bounded north and west by an amphitheatre of mountains 2,000 feet high, the climate is very good, the influence of hot winds not being felt’. This is how the Australian Handbook described the town in 1903. Today it is a rural service centre on the Tarra River. The town is notable for its proximity:

  • To Ninety Mile Beach,
  • The outstanding cool rainforest of the Tarra-Bulga National Park,
  • The Strzelecki Ranges and
  • The wild beauty of Wilsons Promontory.

The South Gippsland Highway passes through Yarram on its journey near Victoria’s southern coastline. It opens up into a wide boulevard through the town centre with attractive gardens in the central strip. The town features several historical buildings. These include the landmark Regent Theatre (built in 1928) and the Yarram Courthouse Gallery. The Gallery now functions as a local visitor information centre and gallery.

The Amazing Wall Murals around Yarram

Around town are a number of prominent and colourful murals depicting various local historical figures. These have been painted on the side of buildings in Yarram by street artist Heesco. Boutique clothing, gifts and curio stores are a delight to wander as you stroll about the town.

The Tarra Cycling Trail is a gently undulating old rail trail. It is an excellent introductory ride for young families, between Yarram and Alberton.

The Yarram Memorial Gardens are located at the southern end of the town’s commercial centre. They are next to the bowling green and pool, and feature water attractions, pathways and a playground.

At the northern entrance to town there is a picnic area just off the highway. It is based around the old bridges over the Tarra River and overlooks this waterway and surrounding grazing land.

Take a Scenic Drive

For a scenic drive into the Strzelecki Ranges, follow the Tarra Valley Road north-west from Yarram heading towards Traralgon. The 30 kilometre journey to the heart of the Tarra Bulga National Park is along a narrow, winding road. It closely follows the Tarra River as it passes through dense rainforest and fern gullies. Along the way are various picnic spots beside the Tarra River and the scenic Tarra Falls.

The Tarra Bulga National Park has a comprehensive visitor centre located at Balook. This is the starting point for a number of scenic trails through the rainforest. A 280 metre stroll from the Bulga picnic ground is a grand pedestrian suspension bridge which spans a lush fern valley.
