Egremni beach

Egremni is a picturesque wild beach located on the very southwestern edge of Lefkada, about 40 km from Lefkada. It is considered one of the most beautiful not only on the island itself, but also throughout the Mediterranean Sea. At the same time, the long coast gives it the glory of the longest on Lefkada. Therefore, impressive landscapes can be enjoyed here in relative seclusion than on other beautiful, but very crowded beaches of the island.

Beach description

Egremni is a paradise place for those who value natural charm and privacy. The sense of isolation from the whole world is due to the massive cliffs surrounding this beach, making it difficult to access. But the spectacular scenery is worth the trip.

  • The white limestone that emerge from the emerald cut of the dense vegetation that covers the majestic 150-meter high cliffs against the contrast of turquoise sea waters creates an impressive landscape, which makes Egremni one of the three best beach places in Lefkada along with Porto Katsiki and Katisma.
  • the waves are constant here: until noon - not very strong, in the afternoon - the most powerful, noisy and foamy, often reaching 3 m high. These conditions allow to hone your surfboard skills.
  • Egremni is famous for its very clean water, impressively rich in turquoise coloring. Depth starts suddenly, at a slight distance from the shore. In the southern part of the beach, the sea is so deep that cruise ships can stop even off the coast.

The stretched 2,5-kilometre-long shore is covered with very pure light sand with inclusions of small stones and pebbles, which prevail on the seabed. With such length and varying width of the cost from 20 to 50 meters it is almost never crowded here. Even when sightseeing boats bring tourists, everyone can find a place for privacy on the shore. The outskirts of the beach are usually overcrowded, and nudists rest in its center.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

There is almost no infrastructure on the coast of Egremni beach. In summer, there is a kiosk that sells snacks and food, and you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers. But it is better to take some supplies (at least water) with you.

  • If you want to go surfing here or other options for water leisure, you will have to take all the necessary equipment with you - its rental is not provided here.
  • There are no rescuers on duty here, so you will have to take care of safety yourself. If you have children, it is better to go to a more comfortable beach where there are no strong waves.
  • There are no toilets on the coast, and wild camping is not uncommon here.

It is best to stay in the nearest village of Athani, where it is possible to rent an apartment or villa. For example, you can choose Okeanos Luxury Villas . This hotel is 700 m away from the beach or Aloni Studios & Apartments which is 3 km away from Egremni.

Useful information

  1. The road to the beach begins a few kilometers south of the village of Athani. At the beginning, the path is paved, and then replaced by a dirt one. Having left the car in the parking lot, you will have to overcome about 340 steps down to the beach by a vertical staircase. You should take care of comfortable shoes for the descent.
  2. To avoid traffic jams on a narrow road, it is better to go to the beach in the early morning hours. But it is better to get to Egremni by boat from Vasiliki or Nydri. This will save you from the complexity of the descent-ascent, which is also not considered safe after the earthquake of 2015.
  3. You should take into account that in strong winds access by sea is prohibited. Also, not all sea excursions include a stop on the Egremni beach, only allowing tourists to admire it from the sea before visiting other beaches of the island. The main disadvantage of the boat trip is the numerous crowds of vacationers.
  4. For walking along the beach and entering the water, rubber slippers will not be superfluous, so as not to get hurt on sharp pebbles and not to feel discomfort when walking on pebbles.
  5. You should not stay near the cliffs or visit this picturesque beach after prolonged rains - there is a high probability of rockfalls and landslides. You also should not camp near the sea, because sudden strong waves can easily wash things off the beach.
