A half-wave dipole, also known as a doublet, or the Hertz antenna, is the most commonly used type of dipole antenna. The length of its conductive elements is approximately half of the maximum wavelength (λ/2, the distance between two consecutive maximum or minimum points) in free space at the frequency of operation.

Is a half-wave antenna better than a quarter wave?
While there is a theoretical gain of about 3 dB over a 1/4-wave antenna, in practice, this benefit is seldom realized. Therefore, there is no compelling reason to "upgrade" to a 1/2-wave antenna unless remote antennas are required for the application.
How does a half-wave antenna work?
Since the length of the antenna is one half the wavelength of the wave, the oscillating field induces standing waves of voltage (V, represented by the red band) and current in the rods. The oscillating currents (black arrows) flow down the transmission line and through the receiver (represented by the resistance R).
Does a half-wave antenna need a ground plane?
It does not require a ground plane to work efficiently. In fact it is best to install the 1/2 wave antenna at least 8 inches from any nearby metal objects for better performance.
Why is a half-wave dipole antenna used?
The reason we use a half-wave antenna and not a full-wave, is because of the definition of a wavelength. In one wavelength (or one cycle), it goes positive and negative (then repeats another cycle). Both of these positive and negative swings are a what I'll call a “resonant event”.
A true half-wave dipole is one half of the wavelength λ in length, where λ = c / f in free space. · A dipole is omnidirectional in the plane perpendicular to ...
It is a normal dipole antenna, where the frequency of its operation is half of its wavelength. Hence, it is called as half-wave dipole antenna.
One wavelength at 600 MHz is = c / f = 0.5 meters. Hence, the half-wavelength dipole antenna's length is 0.25 meters (or 9.85 inches if you don't like the ...
Many hams' first choice of antenna is a half-wave dipole. But don't be misled – just because they are easy to make doesn't mean they don't work well.
