This high-performance, medium telephoto is ideal for sports arenas and concert halls. Also fantastic for portraits, action and astronomical photography.
I've heard people describe it as slow. I find it more than adequate for general use. Similar speed to the 85mm and 50mm 1.8G lenses, but with some motor noise.

The Nikon 180mm f/2.8 ED lens is a legendary lens, and with good reason. It's performance for normal daytime photography is simply outstanding.
It's quite cheap, quite fast, quite sharp - could sound very average, but add wonderful colors, bokeh and contrast and you have a truly outstanding lens.
