UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUDWIG J OHANN FRIEDRICH NICOLAI OF DRESDEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO PHATECO GESELLSGHAFT MIT BESGHRANKTER HAFTUNG, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY.
RUBBING APPARATUS FOR THE GUMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed May 26. 1907. Serial No. 375.700.
To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, LUDwIG JoHANN. FRIEDRICH NIcoLAI, a subject of the Freie und Hansestadt, Hamburg, Germany, residing at Dresden, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improve jecting support for a piece of smooth fabric,
plush, leather or the like, and further in a cover with an opening corresponding to the sup ort, beingarranged over the plate in suc manner that the piece of material can be stretched over andsecurely held on the support. its shape may resemble a tooth brush, is chiefly intended for cleaning and rubbing the gums. The immediately operative art is constituted by a piece or ieces of fa ric mounted on a hump-shaped support, in a detachable manner.
Figure 1 is a face-view of a friction instrument constructed in accordance with the present invention. .Fig. 2,'is a side view partly in section. Fig. 3, is a section on the line wa: Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of different kinds of friction fabric. Fig. 6 is a cross section through the handle of'the back plate and extension of the cover plate showing a modified arrangement of the two parts. Fig. 7 is a vertical section thereof.
The late a which at the end is formed into a andle, is provided with an arched support I; of soft rubber. The support I) may be secured to the platea in any suitable manner, in the present instance said support being formed with a dovetailed extension I) fitting a corresponding recess a in the plate 0.. Over the plate a, is arranged a cover 0 provided with an o ening d. The opening (1 corresponds to the imensions of the support I). The frame formed by the opening en- The friction instrument which in the support 5 and held fast.
The covering plate 0 is connected to the back plate a by means of a'hinge f and is provided with an extension g correspondmg to the handle of the back plate. By grasping' 9. and a together, the cover is thus pressed against the back plate and held secure in that position. The extension 9 preferably partly surrounds the baclidplate a in the manner shown in Fig. 3, in 0 er to insure the-proper engagement of the two parts. The same object could, however, beattained by means of a pin or any other projection 72. on the extension g adapted to ables a piece of fabric 2 to be stretched over I enter. a recess is in the handle part of the back plate a.
-The (projection on the instrument can be covere with various pieces of fabric, which are supplied with the instrument in sets.
The piece a (Fig.2) is made of gauze-like substance. For strong friction a piece a (Fig. 4) is used of firm plush, for instance linen plush. Such pieces of fabriccan, be
fabric impregnated with a suitable cosmetic What'I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A friction instrument comprising a handle, a projection on the end of the handle, an apertured cover adapted to fit-over said projection and means. for securing the cover to the handle substantially as set-forth,
2. A friction instrument comprising a handle, a projection on the end of the. handle, an apertured cover ada ted to fit over said projection and a hinge connection between the cover andthe handle substantially as set forth.
3. A friction, instrument comprislng a handle, a curved projection on the end sions fittin over both sides of the handle 10 thereof, a cover ate with an opening substantial as set forth.. i adapted to fit over the projection and an ex- In testimony whereof I have signed my tension fitting over the handle substantially name to this specification in the presence of 5 as set forth. 7 two subscribing witnesses.
4. A friction instrument comprising a LUDWIG JOHANN FRIEDRICH NIOOLAI. handle, a curved projection on the end Witnesses: thereof,-,a cover plate with an opening OTTO WOLFE,
adapted to fit over the projection and exten- RICHARD IssUTE.
