DE HAVEN MORRIS, OF WILMINGTON, DELAJVARE.
TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,733, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed June 1, 1903. Serial No. 159,467. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DE HAVEN Monmsa citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the city of Wilmington, county of Newcastle, State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools, as axes, hatchets, hammers, &c.', and it consists in making the tool of a plurality of parts, whereby economy of material and labor is secured.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as Will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hatchet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view. of the same. Fig. 8 represents a section through the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a rear end view.
Similar characters of reference indicate cor-- responding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate the sides of the pole of an ax or hatchet. Each of these has a narrowed portion C, a shoulder D, a recess E, and a corner notch or recess F. Each is also pierced with rivetholes G, countersunk at H. The side A has an additional recess K, to which corresponds an abutment L on the side B.
The blade M is of usual or desired form. is pierced with rivet-holes N, and may have the usual lathing-notch P.
When the parts are assembled as shown in the drawings, the portions O cooperate to form a recess for the rear end of the face portion, shown as a blade M, which abuts against the shoulders D, the holes G and N registering to receive rivets R, which may be headed in the countersunk apertures H. In the same way the recesses E conjoin to form an eye, the abutment L enters into and fills the recess K, and the corn er recesses 2 together make a dovetailed notch, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be noted that the blade M is firmly held between the portion O and that, owing to the shoulders D, against which the blade is firmly held, and the engagement of the abutment L in the recess K, no shearing effect can be produced on the rivets.
My invention permits the making of an ax 0r hatchet having a steel blade and a pole of suitable metal, as malleable iron, dropforgings, steel castings, &c.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which may come within the scope of my invention, and 1 do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tool comprising a pole or body of tapering thickness in two parts, having recesses coacting to form an eye, one of said parts having a groove extending its entire width and the other an abutment entering and fillingsaid groove, said groove and said abutment being located between said eye and the thicker end of said body, and a face portion secured between said parts.
2. A tool comprising a pole or body consisting of a plurality of parts, a face portion and means for securing said pole parts and said face portion together, said pole parts being formed with angular corner notches or recesses in their adjacent faces, whereby a nail-headengaging notch is formed in said pole.
DE HAVEN MORRIS.
