Description

@uiten tatrs @strut @Hita ELLIS THAYER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF A N D GEORGE W. THAYER, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 68,259, dated-August 2T, 1867.
IMPROVED DUST-BRUSH.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that I, ELLIS THAYER, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Dust-Brushes; Yand I do hereby deelarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i
The drawing represents a perspective view, partly in section, of my improved dustbrush.
. This invention relates 'to a dust-brush, in which the bristles or haii' are secured to a block which is reversible o n the holder, so that both ends of the brush may he, used, and so that the brush need not be useless because one end is used up-while the other is still good.
The block to. which the bristles are glued is provided with bevellel edges, which ar'e made to fit into a dovetail groove, which is provided in the handle. A rubber spring attached to the inner face of one of the parts' serves to press the bristle-block up against the bevelled sides of the groove in the handle, thercbyholding the former in position, and preventing it from dropping out. l
A represents the grooved handle, B is the block, C are the bristles, D the spring.
It is evident that the blockiB maybe grooved, and the handle A tongned, as well as vice versa; also, that the tongue and groove need not be dove-tailed, as shown, but can have any other suitable shape.
I am aware that it is not new to make the brush reversible, as for that purpose the plate has already been pivoted to the handle, so that it can be turned on the same and be thus reversed. The disadvantage of such a device is that the block is separated from the handle, and that the whole is thus weakened; besides, it is more expensive to have a pivot and catches to hold the block in any one position. i 4
By muy invention the strength of the handle or block is the same as if theywere made of one piece.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The reversible sliding-block B of a dust-brush, when arranged on the grooved or tongued handle A in the manner set forth, andvwhen itself` tongued or grooved, substantially as herein shown andfdescribed.
2. The reversible sliding-block B of a dust-brush, in combination with the-handle A and spring D, all made and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
ELLIS THAYER.
