gira/)rv @lea/cb @y MM HIRAM S. LEACH, OF ENOSBURG, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE'HALF TO MOSES P. PERLEY,
OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,430, dated March 8, 1898.
Application filed August l 2 l 8 9 '7.
To all wwnt it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM S. LEACH, of Enosburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in thill-couplings, and has more particular relation to antirattling couplings.
The invention consists of the combination, with a suitable axle-clip having apertured lugs, of a coupling-pin having a transverse passage formed in one end, a spring-pressed lever pivotally mounted on one of the apertured lugs, and a pin or projection on the end of said lever and adapted to enter the transverse passage formed in the coupling-pin.
The invention also consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, Figure 1 represents aperspective View of the coupling embodying my invention, the coupling-pin being in position, but the thill-iron omitted; and Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same with the thill-iron in position.
1 inthe drawings represents the axle-clip 2 and 3, the spaced lugs mounted thereon; 4, the coupling-pin; 5, the thill-iron, and 6 my improved pin-lock.
The axle-clip 1 is oa-ny ordinary construction and is provided with apertured spaced lugs 2 and 3, which project forwardly therefrom. The forward end of the lug 2 is provided With an elongated head 7, formed with a cylindrical passage 8, adapted to receive the end of the coupling-pin- The lug 3 is formed with a head 9, having a square aperture 10 formed therein and adapted to receive the square portion 11 of the coupling-pin. The end of said pin 4 which lies within the elongated head 7 is formed with a transverse pinpassage 12, the use of which will be hereinafter more particularly described. The elongated portion of said head 7 is provided with a lateral pin-passage 13, adapted to coincide Serial No. 648,043. (No model.)
with the pin-passage 12 when the pin 4 is in position, the square structure of said pin and the aperture 1l through which it passes cans ing such alinement. The lug2 is further provided with a recess, in which is pivoted a lever 15. This lever is provided at its outer end with a pivot pin or projection 16, which normally lies in the pin-passage 13 and the longitudinal passage of the head '7, so as to project into the pin-passage 12 and prevent the withdrawal of the coupling-pin 4. Said lever 15 may consist of a steel spring, if desired, and is connected at its rear end With pins or projections to the lug 2 by a coilspring 17, whereby said pin 16 is normallyl held forward into engagement with the pinpassage 12.
It will be observed from the foregoing de scription that when it is desired to uncouple the thill-iron 5, which is mounted upon the pin 4, the lever 15 or spring is operated against the tension of the spring 17, thus withdrawing the pin 16 from the aperture l2 and leaving the coupling-pin free to be drawn length- Wise from the lugs 2 and 3. The construction is such that all danger of the accidental uncoupling of the pin 4 is avoided, as the pin 16 is held positively in position under springpressure.
Having thus described my invention, What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a thill-couplin g, the combination with an axle-clip, of spaced lugs mounted thereon and provided one with a square and the other with a round opening, one lug having a transverse pinbpening, a coupling-bolt having a square butt-end to engage the square passage in one of the lugs, a lever pivotally connected intermediate its ends to one of said lugs and extending longitudinally under the same, and a locking-pin carried on the end of said lever and adapted to enter the pin-opening in the lug, and also a corresponding pin-opening in the coupling-pin, substantially as described.
2. An aXle-clip having separated lugs, one of which is provided with a square opening, and the other with a round opening to receive a coupling-pin, one of said lugs being also provided with a substantially vertical pinopening extending transversely through the IOO lower wall of the lug, in combination with a coupling-pin having a squared butt-end and a round extremity and provided with a transverse pin-opening near its extremity adapted to register with the pin-opening in the lug, and a spring-pressed lever fulerumed intermediate its ends on one of the ings and eX- tending longitudinally under the same and carrying at one end a pin entering the pinopening in the lug and coupling-pin, substan- Io tiaiiy as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
