UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MEDOR J. DE LENT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BRUSH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,739, dated July 28, 1896.
Application filed August 24, 1895. Serial No- 560,377. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MEDOR J. DE LENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Brush-Holders, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention has for its objectto provide a simple, cheap, and effective holder whereby a hair-brush or like article may be folded into small compass and maybe securely inclosed and protected against dust or dirt when not in use, and whereby also a convenient handle will be aiforded for the brush when it is to be used. This object of my invention I have accomplished by the novel features of construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved brush-holder, the inclosing casing being shown in folded position to serve as a handle for the brush. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the inclosing casing unfolded in readiness to receive the brush. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the inclosing casing with the brush turned down therein. Fig. 4 is a View in vertical crosssection on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view in cross-section through the checkspring adjacent the joint between the brush and the inclosing casing.
A designates the brush that is carried by the hinged plate B, that forms a cover for the casing wherein the brush will be inclosed when not in use. The edges of the plate or cover B are preferably formed with the inwardlyturned side flanges b, that serve to engage the back of the brush and retain it in position upon the plate or cover B. At the end of the plate or cover B is preferably formed an end flange b, that will close the open space at the end of the inclosing casing farthest from the brush, as shown more fully in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The hinged end of the plate or cover B is formed with a flange b the reverted edges of which receive'the hinge rod or pintle D, whereby the cover B is connected with the main body of the inclosing casing. This hinge rod or pintle D has its outer ends fixed to the flange b but passes loosely through the reverted upper edge e of a flange e, that is formed at one end of the inclosing casing. By preference the flange e at the hinged end of the inclosing casing has a cut-away space at its upper edge, and within this space sets an angular block d, that is fixed to and revolves with the hinge-pintle D, and against the faces of this block 61 bears the free end of a plate-spring f, that is fastened to the flange e of the inclosing casing, as
more particularly seen in Figs. 2 and 5 of the' drawings. The purpose of the block (2 and the spring f is to retain the brush in open position, as seen in Fig 2, and as well also to retain the brush and the cover B, when turned to the closed position seen in Fig. 3.
The body of the inclosing casing is formed of a bottom plate E, to which are hinged the angular side portions E and E Each of these side portions E and E consists of a part adapted to be brought in the plane of the bottom plate E when the angular side portions are turned outwardly, as seen in Fig. 2, and adapted also to be turned to vertical position, as seen in Fig. 1, when the body of the inclosing casing is folded to constitute a handle for the brush while being used. At each end of the angular side portions E and E are preferably formed the corner plates or flanges 6 which serve to close the body of the casing when the brush and cover are turned down to the position shown in Fig. 3.
By reference more particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be seen that the bottom plate E of the inclosing casing is preferably formed at each side with a shoulder 6 against which will bear the edge e of the adjacent angular side portion E, the purpose of this shoulder being to limit the turning of the angular side portions outward and retain them in proper position to receive the brush when the brush and cover are turned to the closed position seen in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the brush or like article is to be used the cover B will be turned to the position seen in Fig. 2, after which the angular side portions E and E will be folded inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1. By thus folding inwardly the angular side portions E and E the inclosing casing constitutes a small and convenient handle whereby the brush can be held while being used. When the cover B is in the position shown by Figs. 1 and 2, the spring f, bearing upon one face of the angular block 61, serves to retain the cover and brush in the position for use. WVhen it is desired to fold the brush into the inclosing casing, the angular side portions E and IE will be turned outward to the position seen in Fig. 2, after which the cover B will be turned downwardly to the closed position seen in Figs. 3 and 4. WVhen the cover. B is thus turned downwardly, its side flanges b will set within the angular portions E and E of the inclosing casing, while the end flange b of the cover will set over the end flanges e of the angular side portions E and E By this means the brush A will be securely inclosed, so that all danger of its becoming soiled or fouled is avoided, and in this position the casing can be conveniently carried in the pocket.
It will be understood that when the cover B is turned to the closed position seen in Figs. 3 and 4 the spring f will by its bearing upon the angular block d serve to retain the cover in closed position.
It is manifest that the details of construction may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. It will be seen also that instead of a hair-brush any other form of brush or like article, such as a mirror or the like, can be attached to the inner face of the cover B.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An article of the character described, comprising a hinged cover by which a brush or like article is carried in combination with an inclosing casing having folding side portions to form a handle for the brush or like article and adapted also to form an inclosing casing for the same, substantially as described.
2. An article of the character described, comprising the combination with a cover whereby the brush or like article is carried, of an inclosing casing, the sides and part of the bottom of which are formed of the folding angular portions E and E hinged to the bottom of the inclosing casing, said angular portions being provided with end flanges, substantially as described.
3. An article of the character described, comprising the combination with a hinged cover whereby the brush or like article is carried, of an inclosing casing having flanges e and e at its ends and having angular side portions E and E hinged to its bottom plate, said angular side portions being provided with the end flanges, substantially as described.
4. An article of the character described, comprising the combination with a cover B having the side flanges b and the end flanges b, of an inclosing casing having folding side portions between which the flanges b will fit when the cover is turned to closed position and having end flanges 6 over which the end flange b will fit when the cover is closed, substantially as described.
