Description

UNITE STATES PATENT FFICE.
SAMUEL RUST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 564, dated January 9, 1838.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL RUST, of the city of New Yo-rk, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Samuel Rusts Patent Lamp, and other Analogous Lamps for Lighting Houses, Stores, and other Places, which patent was granted unto the said Samuel Rust October 6, 1835, and has been since sold to Tilliam Rowe, of Fishkill, Dutchess county, State of New York, and that the following is a full and correct description of said improvement as invented or improved by me.
My invention or improvement is for the application of a glass shade to the said Samuel Rusts patent lamp and other analogous lamps, which has been heretofore attended with difliculty on account of the obstruction of the roller which regulates the wick. This shade I apply by inserting the said roller into the shade-holder of the lamp or within or between the supporters or holders of the shade, in whatever way they may be used. This shade-holder has a hole or opening for the tube or socket which receives the wick and the roller is inserted into or below this hole or opening and through orl at the side of the tube or socket as A Figures l and 2 or it is inserted above the hole or opening` into one of the air holes of the shade-holder and through or at the side of the tube or socket as Figs. 3 and it or within or between the supporters or holders of the shade as may be used. The shade-holder is made higher than those in common lamps, (that is to raise the shade higher) so as to allow room to insert the roller under the shade. It is also made to be screwed or'inf serted into the lamp as Figs. l and 2 or it is made longen the bot-tom where the tube is received as Fig. 5,-or it may be made in any other convenient way, and used on top of the stopple Fig. G, or on a tube without any stopple with the roller inserted into it, or within or between the apparatus, or holders of the shade in whatever wayl they may be made, used, or applied; which invention or improvement as described I apply Vto the astral, mantle, branch, store and common close or handlamps, both glass and metal and of every kind where the said roller may be used to regulate the wick as in the `lamp aforesaid.
I do not in this patent claim a tube, or a ro-ller, or the insertion of the roller into a tube or socket or into a stopple but I claim` gous way or manner and for which I request Letters Patent.
Witness my hand this fifth day of December A. D. one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven. Y
SAMUEL RUST.
Vitnesses C. NAGLE, HERSOHEL CAMP.
