Description

UNITED sTATns PATENT ermee.
L. A. GEscHEIDT, oF NEW YORK, N. v.
PESSARY.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,556, dated May 9, 1848.
'prevent the falling of the womb, and to cure that defect by keeping it in its proper place; but all the modes employed eifect the object only in part, because the uterus is not forced back to its natural position, allowed to fall at least some inches from its true place upon contrivances which from their hard nature cause irritation and produce inflammation. To obviate these inconveniences and to employ such means which eHect both objects viz: the replacing of the uterus in its natural position and keeping it there by means of an instrument which causes no irritation, and which admits at the same time, injections upon the suffering parts, whereby an ultimate cure can be effected, I have invented the pherysteron alluded'to, which consists of an elastic 'ring and an airtight bag, which is secured to the ring and which bag can be inflated in such a manner as to support the uterus.
The following is a full and exact description: The ring which I use, and upon which the airbag is secured is made of india rubber or of any other suitable elastic substance; it exerts through its elastic nature a uniform pressure upon the surrounding parts within the vagina, and causes consequently less irritation, as a hard nonelastic body will produce.
The ring A, see Figures 1 to 7 in the accompanying drawing, is either oval or of the ligure 8 as in Fig. 7 it is entirely covered on both sides with india rubber cloth see Figs. 2 and 3 (sections) a, b; and where there is a strong secret-ion from the vagina or the uterus I make two holes in the surfaces of the oval to give egress to the secretion see Figs. l, 4, and 7, c, ci. Upon one side of the oval or otherwise shaped ring I place a short elastic bag of india rubber cloth or any other suitable substances see Figs. l, 2, 3, and 5, B, which is fastened to the surface of the ring A and its covering b,
in such a manner, as to make the bag perfectly airtight. In order to inflate this bag B, I pass a small elastic tube see Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, C, through the surfaces of the oval or ring a, b which opens into the airbag B, see sections Figs. 2 and 3. At the end of the small tube, which projects toward the opening of the vagina, is a small valve, which closes when the bag is inflated through the pressure of the air within see Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, D.` The bag lills the space of the vagina without distending it, as Fig. 8 shows at e.
To apply injections I place over the aforesaid airbag B another similar elastic bag, of somewhat larger dimensions see Figs. 3, 4,6, E, which is fixed upon the oval in a similar manner as the above described bag B, this bag E may be provided with a number of holes on its upper end f; and in order to pass the injections up the bag and through the holes at f', I pass a small tube F, see Figs. 3 and 4, through the surfaces of the oval, large enough to admit the end of a syringe; the fluid when injected passes up the small tube' F and between the bag B and E and out at the holes at f upon'the suffering parts.
This instrument is applied in the following manner, after the oval has been dipped into oil or any other lubricating matter, and after the air has been forced out from the air bag, the instrument is placed between the thumb and first finger, and passed up the vagina, in such a manner that the flat sides of the oval, with the air bag on one side, and the small tube on the other, are turned toward the hipbones, and when the instrument has reached above the hipbones, it is brought in a horizontal position, that the air bag B, see Fig. 8, comes toward the uterus, and the small tubes downward. The oval A, see Fig. 8, with its greater diameter is placed upon the tuberosity of the iscliium when the instrument has been .properly placed, the air bag B is inflated, by means of a long tube G, see Fig. 4, which is screwed on to the small tube C with its valve D. In case the small tube C, with the valve D causes inconvenience a small elastic bag can be fastened over it.
Vhen the instrument is required to be removed, the air is allowed to escape from the bag B, which is effected by removing the valve D from the tube C.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letoval with an airtight bag, and a second bag ters Patent, isto admit the application of inspections subl. The combination of an elastic ring or stantially herein described. oval With an airtight bag substantially here- ANTONY GESCHEIDT. 5 in described, which serves as supporter of Witnesses:
the uterus. B. STERN,
2. The combination of an elastic ring or yHERMAN FUNK.
