Description

1., G.` TREADWELLl vCoal Sduttle.
-Patented April'ZS, 1861.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. TREADWELL, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
ooAL-scuTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,158, dated April 23, 1861.
To all lwhom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. TREADWELL of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Coal- Scuttles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, which represent a section and a top view o-f my scuttle, A represents the body' of the scuttle which `is constructed in any of the known and usual ways. This-body is provided with a topB, which is secured on permanently. The top is provided with two openings E and D, one for the reception and the other for the discharge of coal. The opening E may or may not be provided with a movable coveras may be desirable.
The object of this invention is evident. Vhen the ordinary coal scuttle is used for filling stoves with coal, the coal is very liable to fall over the sides of the scuttle upon the floor, often making much litter and giving unnecessary trouble. With this invention coal may be filled into the stove through the opening D without fear of its falling upon the floor.
The top B, it will be s-een is peculiarly constructed, being raised or arched near the discharge opening so as to allow the `coal to pass out freely. Without this peculiar construction the invention would be inoperative, and therein it diers from other covered vessels used for dierent purposes.
I am aware that scuttles with hinged covers have been used, but these do not remedy the evil spoken of. Hence I disclaim scuttles thus constructed; but
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is vThe within described coal scuttle as an article of manufacture, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J NO. G. TREADVVELL.
