Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS KOCH, OF SOUTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPARATUS FOR TRIMMING PAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs KOCH, of South Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Trimming-Form for Trimming Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side section of my invention taken in the line ai, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This inventionv consists in the employment or use of a pressure box operated by a screw or its equivalent and provided with a fiap or adjustable board in connection with a pivoted cutting board and a gage board all being arranged as hereinafter shown and described, whereby the desired work may be expeditiously and perfectly performed.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
VA, represents a platform or bed piece which has two uprights B, B, attached to it, said uprights having a horizontal bar C, fitted in their upper ends, in one end of which, a vertical screw or rod D, is fitted.
E, is a box to which the lower part of the screw or rod D, is attached. This box E, has a flap or board a, attached to its outer side by hinges Z), the hinges being at the upper edge of the fiap or board so as to admit of the latter turning upward when required.
F, is a board which is secured to one of the uprights B, and rests on the bed-piece A. This board F, has a supplemental board G, attached to it by a set screw ax, the board being somewhat elevated so as to admit of the edge of a cutting board H, fitting under it, as shown in Fig. l. In the bottom of the cutting board H, there is a pin c, which projects down within an oblong slot d, in the upper surface of the bed-piece A, as shown in Fig. l.
The operation is as follows: The paper to be cut shown in red is placed on the cutting board H, and secured thereon in any proper 29,891, dated September 4, 1860.
way. The box E, is pressed down on the top of the paper, and the flap or board t is turned down and the front edge of the paper cut o clean. The box E, is then elevated the board H, drawn outward and then turned so that the cut edge of the paper will bear against the board G, the inner edge of the board H being shoved under board G, the box E, is then pressed down on the paper the flap or board a, thrown up and the remaining sides of the paper cut.
It will be seen that the flap a, admits of the paper' being cut at the side opposite to that which bears against the board G, as the latter board when the edge of the paper which was first cut bears against it, shoves out the opposite end beyond the front end of the box E, and the iap a, being raised, suiiicient margin is obtained to trim the front edge of the paper properly-the latter being therefore trimmed and squared. The flap t therefore is an essential feature of the invention. The two sides of the paper at right angles with the front are cut at the last adjustment of box E, the second or last adjust-ment of box E, causing the paper to be perfectly squared so that the last outer or front cut will be parallel with the first and the two side cuts at right angles with the former ones.
The fitting of the pin o, of the cutting board I-I, in the oblong slot d, of the bed piece A, admits of the drawing out and turning of the cutter board H.
If a screw D, be used for actuating the box E, power may be applied directly to it. If a smooth rod be employed any suitable lever attachment may be connected to it.
I do not claim any of the within described parts separately; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the box E, provided with a flap a, with the adjustable rotating cutting board I-I, and with or without the gage Gr, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
.IULIUS KOCH.
