The applicator and 1 andZ of the drawing is broadly designated therein by the numeral 10.
Device 10 includes abrush element 12 and combinath f pr v? i .Figf4-lisaa fragmentary vertical, cross-sectional! view Q ed on. the neck ef massage device illustrated Figs.
tion material-receiving and handle structure 14. Structure 14 comprises an elongated, hollow, cylindrical, cupshaped, relatively thin walled component 16 which is most like. Component 16 is provided with a neck 18 at one end thereof which defines a circular opening 20 and as is illustrated in Fig. 2, neck 18 is ofiset inwardly with respect to the side Wall 22 of component 16. A bottom wall 24 closes the opposite end .of component 16 and the outermost surface of neck 18 is suitably threaded as at 26.
Detachably secured to component -16 in' covering relationship to opening 20, is a closure cap broadly numer Patented July 12, 1960 e ce ated 28,'which includes an end 30 normally disposed in covering relationship to neck 18 and an annular band 32 which is integral with the peripheral edge of end 30 and extends outwardly from one face of the latter in perpendicular relationship to end 30. If desired, a protective insert 34 of wax-impregnated paper or the like may be provided within closure cap 28 which prevents material 36 in component 16 from reaching metallic cap 28.
As is apparent in Fig.2, band 32 is formed so as to present inwardly-extending threads 38 which are adapted to complementally engage threaded portion 26 of neck 18. The outermost end of band 32 is turned outwardly and rebent upon itself to form a round bead 40.
Brush element 12 is suitably fitted over closure cap 28,
and includes a circular, substantially planar member 42,
'and a plurality of frusto-conical, relatively closely spaced, substantially-parallelfingers 44 secured to the, face 46 of. p, member 42 and; extending outwardly ztli'erefrom'i*-iinisubstantially perpendicular: relationship 5 to the plane of V face46; a h H An annular wall 48is-secure'd .to the" peripheral edge of member 42 and extends outwardly "from face50 of member42 in a direction'away from fingers 44. ":Wall 48 7 presents an annular flangewhich is substantially' perpena dicularto face 50 and the-innermost 'arcuate surface 52 is shown in Fig. 2, the distance between member 42 and bead 54 is slightly greater than the distance between end face of wall22.
It can now beascertained that-device 10 is especially adaptedifor facilitating applicationof material 36 to the hair or the like andaddition'ally,"is constructed to facili-z tate'rnass'agin'gof the .scalfwithlfingers 44.
-.It can be appreciated that cap 28 may be unscrewed from neck. 18 while element 12 is positioned-thereon by merely grasping wall .48 and twisting the same in a directionrt'o un'screw'cap 28 from neckg18. flThus, material 36 may be removed from component 16 and either placed directly on the hainor on fingersi44 for subsequentzap plication. Upon replacement of cap 28 and element 12,
fingers '44 may be'utili'zed to massage the scalp or the like by grasping componentY16 and'using the same as a handle tovrnove element 12;
The overlapping of beads 54 and 40 is to be emphasized because such overlapping prevents displacement of element 12 from cap 28during removal of the latter from compon'entx16 and also during use of component 16 as a handle tomoveelement .12 in application ofmaterial 36.andmassaging of theis'calp. m
ci lh'e device illustratedin'Fig. 3iincludes an applicator and massage device which includes'combination material-receiving and handle structure 114 and a brush element 112. Structure 114 includes a component 116 constructed identical to the component 16 illustrated in Figs.
1 and 2 and, therefore,is provided with a cylindrical side wall 122, a bottom wall 124, a neck 118 disposed in in- 'warly offset relationship to wall 122 which defines an opening 120, andtsuitable threads 126 on the external surface of neck 118.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, element 112 is attached directly to neck 118 and closure cap 28 is eliminated. Element 112 includes a circular, substantially planar member 142, a plurality of frusto-conical, relatively closely spaced, substantially parallel fingers 144 extending outwardly from face 146 of member142 in substantially i unbreakable.
3 perpendicular relationship thereto, and an annular wall 148 extending outwardly from face 150 of member 142 in substantially perpendicular relationship to the latter.
The innermost surface of wall 148 is internally threaded as at 138 in a manner so as to complementally engage. the threads 12.6 of neck 138. It is notable that the outermost surface of wall 148 is disposed in substantially fiush relationship with the outer surface of side wall 122.
The operation of device 110 is exactly identical to that of device it? and material 136 may be removed from component 116 by merely unscrewing element 112 to expose opening 120. Again it is to be pointed out that component 116 functions as a handle during use of element 112 to apply material 136 or to massage the scalp.
The invention illustrated fragmentarily in Fig. 4 is indicated broadly by the numeral 210. Device 210 includes a brush element 212 and material-receiving and brush structure 214.
, Device 23rd is different from devices 12 and 110 in that, it is contemplated that'structure 214 be constructed of relatively stiff synthetic resin material so.as .to present a relatively inflexible side wall 222 which is substantially Structure 214 may be'provided with a characteristics of device 210, the same is especially adapted for portable use, inasmuch as the same may be conveniently placed in a pocket or the like without danger of breakage.
Elements 12, 112 and 212 may be formed of various materials, but it is particularly contemplated that they be constructed of synthetic resin substances which are adapted for extrusion moulding or casting operations. Fingers 44, 144 and 244 should be relatively flexible but of suflicient nonflexibility that the same will brush up hair or'the like in the proper manner without in any manner injuring the users hair or scalp.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
Hair grooming structure comprising an elongated, hollow handle having a bottom wall, a relatively inflexible, cylindrical side wall, and an uppermost annular edge defining an opening, rendering the handle adaptable to receiving a hair grooming substance; a cover for said opening comprising a disc-like element of flexible material having a circular edgeand a pair of opposed,,fiat, parallel surfaces, one of said surfaces normally engaging said edge of the handle, a downturned, annular side wall inshiftable bottom wall (not shown) to the end that ma terial 236 :rnayzbe pushed outwardly through the neck 218 defining opening 220.
. Element 212 is fitted over neck 218 of structure 214 and includes a substantially circular planar member 242 which has a plurality of substantially parallel, closely.
spaced fingers 244 extending outwardly from face, 246 thereof.
Element 212 is also provided with a continuous side, wall 222 joined to the peripheral edge of member 242 and extending-outwardly from face 250 of member 242 in parallel relationship to fingers 244. The innermostsurface of peripheral wall 222 is provided with an inwardlyextending first bead 254 which is adapted to interlock with an outwardly-extending second bead 2449 which is integral with the uppermost edge of neck 218. As clearly apparent in Fig. 4, the outermost surface of bead-240 is inmaterial 236 may be removed from structure 214 by merely pushing upwardly on fingerpiece 258 to remove element 212 therefrom, whereupon material 236 may be pushed outwardly through opening 220. Thereupon, ma terial 236 may be either applied directly to the hair or to fingers 244, element 212 subsequently placed again upon neck 218, and then element 212 utilized to spread material 236 on the persons' hair by fingers 244 through the hair. Because of the substantially non-breakable ch'ned and slopes outwardly as the uppermost edge of p tegralwith said element and. depending from said one sur face in surrounding relationship to the handle; a first bead integral with the sidewall of thecover. and. surrounding the handle;a second bead integral-,with'the handle and.
surrounding the latter adjacent said edge, the secondbead being clamped between'the' first beadandsaid onesure face, said beads having tightly interengaging,3dove-tailed surfaces whereby'the cover-snaps into place when mount ed 'on the handle; a finger piece integral with the'side wall of the cover and extending'radially outwardly therefrom for manually snapping the cover oil the handle; and scalp massaging and brushing means on said cover including a plurality of closely juxtaposed, identical fingers integral with said cover and extending outwardly from the outer of said surfaces of the element throughout substantially the entire area thereof, each finger being substantially a solid, truncatedcone' with the outermost apex and thereofdome-shaped.
