1 Claim. (Cl. 15-131) This invention relates to a cosmetics and lotion applicator by means of which the lotions or creams may be easily applied to any part of the body including the back of the body. The purpose of my invention is to provide a cosmetics and lotion applicator consisting substantially of a frame with an elongated handle, on which a pad of sponge rubber, foam plastic, or any other porous material is slipped over, forming a space between said pad and said frame where liquid cosmetics are held in order to be applied to the skin of the body by penetrating through said porous pad. Another purpose of my invention is to provide an opening on the frame of the applicator closed by a closure through which liquid cosmetics may be introduced into the hollow between the frame of the applicator and the porous pad. A further purpose of my invention is to provide a cosmetic applicator with easily interchangeable porous pad on which outer surface a creamy cosmetic may be applied to be spread on the skin.

Still further novel features and advantages of my invention will become apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings from which:

Figure 5 is a bottom view of the cosmetics and lotion applicator frame of Fig. 4 with the porous pad removed. It should be noted that in the second embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figure 3, parts which are similar to those illustrated in the first form of the invention in Figs. 1 and 2 are indicated by the same reference numerals, primed however. It should also be noted that in Figure 4 and Figure 5 illustrating another embodiment of the present invention, parts corresponding to those illustrated in the first species of the present invention shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 will be illustrated by the t same reference numerals, doublyprimed however. The present cosmetics and lotion applicator consists of a preferably round frame 11 as shown on Figure 2 or of a frame 11" of other shape with rounded corner as shown on Figure 5. The frame 11 has a concave bottom surface, which forms a hollow 14 between the frame 11 and porous pad 10. The porous pad is made from sponge rubber, foam plastic, or any other material having substantial elastic quality. In order to put the pad 10 over frame 11 it has to be stretched and is held over the edge of said frame by a contracting force due to the elasticity of the material from which pad 10 is made. The pad 10 is made substantially in the form of a mushroom with a rim 17 as shown in Figure 1. When pad 10 is inserted over the frame 10, rim 17 overlaps the edge of the frame; portion 18 of pad directly pressing on the edge of frame 11 is considerably compressed providing substantial loss of po- 7 2,829,393 Patented Apr." 8, 1958 rosity in this area. This fact is of major importance because liquid held in the hollow 14 is not able to escape by the outer portion of the pad, and has to pass through portion of the pad 10 located nearer to the center of said pad. The pad 10 may be easily removed, replaced by another one, washed and cleaned. The pad 10 may be made in different shape, may comprise an outer hollow cavity for receiving creamy substance, or may be made from a thin elastic material with plurality of holes instead of being made from a spongy porous material. The frame 10 can be made in several different variants.

Figure 1 illustrates applicatorin which handle 12 is attached to frame 11 by means of screw 13, screwed into threaded hole 16. The handle 12 may be unscrewed and removed and liquid cosmetic introduced through hole 16 to fill the cavity 14. Figure 3 shows an applicator in which frame 11' is cast from plastic integrally with handle 12, which simplifies the manufacturing of it. The liquid cosmetic may be put into the hollow 14' by removing pad 10', and inserting it again as shown on Figure 3 before using it. Figures 4 and 5 illustrate a variant of cosmetics and lotion applicators in which the opening 16 is closed by a plug 15", which permits filling up the cavity 14" without removing pad 10" or of handle 12", which handle may be cast from plastic together with frame 11". Incidentally, it should be noted that the handle 12" comprises an elongated manually grippable handle connected to and extending from said frame 11'. substantially parallel to a plane passing through the peripheral outer edge of said frame 11" (which is the near or bottom edge of said frame 11" as viewed in Fig. 5). It is understood that the preferred embodiment of my invention as described and illustrated, may be altered by a person skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the present invention.

What is claimed is:

A cosmetics and lotion applicator comprising: a frame having a concave front surface defining a recess, a convex back surface and a peripheral outer edge around said recess; an easily compressible porous applicator pad of elastic material having a central body portion and an engaging edge portion including a surrounding rim, said porous pad having a plurality of connecting cells therein normally providing a plurality of passages therethrough from back to front thereof and being compressible under the action of pressure applied to the outer surface of said central body portion to cause expulsion of liquid cosmetics normally contained in said plurality of cells, the central body portion of said compressible porous pad extending substantially transversely across the recess in the front surface of said frame, the engaging edge portion of said compressible porous pad extending elastically over and encompassing said peripheral outer edge of said frame, and said surrounding rim of said compressible porous pad being convexly positioned on said convex back surface of said frame adjacent to said peripheral outer edge of said frame and terminating short of the central portion of said convex back surface and being retained in said relationship with respect to said frame under the action of the elasticity of said porous pad and defining a hollow reservoir including said recess between the front surface of said frame and the central body portion of said porous pad cooperable to receive therein a liquid cosmetic and to feed same to the rear surface of the central body portion of the compressible porous pad for dispensing said liquid cosmetic through the plurality of connecting cells in said central body portion, in response to the application of exterior pressure thereto to the outer surface thereof for selective application to a desired object, said engaging edge portion of said porous pad in elastic engagement with the peripheral outer edge of said frame being so stretched by said engagement as to substantially collapse frame and extending transversely therethrough into the 1 rear of the recess in the front surface of said frame; 1

closure plug means threadedly removably engageable with the loading port and provided with outwardly projecting actuating means manually accessible from a position'exterior of said back surface of said frame for selective actuation for causing threaded engagement and disengagement of said closure plug means with respect to said loading port; and an elongated manually grippable handle connected to and extending from said frame substantially parallel to a plane passing through the peripheral outer edge of the frame.
