This invention relates to band types of power tools,- more particularly to features of assembly of working. elements on a flexible band and. the connection. of the band ends into an endless assembly. I
This invention has utility when incorporated in the mounting of work treating or file elements on a flexible band or strip, and which band. has a detachable connection at one of the strip ends which maintains continuity of operation and alignment of the file segments;
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1v is a front view, with parts. broken away, of an embodiment of the invention, showing: strip ends, at an intermediate position after the T'- head is inserted in the slot, and there is partial turning therefrom toward alignment;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, in. spaced: relation between end portions of a pair of tile elements; and, were it not for this specific pair or elements being at the strip opposite ends with the T-head and slot joint, the: lower element complementary register could be effected by turning clockwise about 90, as shown by the dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the strip or band of Fig. l, with the alignment assembly completed;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation. of'the disconnected strip ends in a. common plane, with the dotted lines indicating the relative position of the T- handle and its slot;
Fig. 5 is a back or inside elevation of the strip ends, with dotted lines between the T-head on one strip end to the slot therefor on the other end, this being the right angle relation therebetween whereby the T-head may be entered into the slot; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view, in spaced relation between the ends of sections in a modified construction, dotted lines showing the corners to abut in complementary register.
A flexible band or steel strip I has rivets 2 therethru to mount a sectional liner 3, and thereon a working element 4, herein shown as a file section with an abrasion effecting face 5. The rivet connection 2 for the element 4 to the band I is near one end of the element 4. This end of the element 4 is shown with an underhangin triangular ledge 6. The rivet held liner 3 extends beyond the ledge 6 in a direction away from the rivets I2, I3 to provide a support for the joint between successive elements 4 thereby to protect the band I from wear due to the relative movement of the rigid elements 4 relatively to the flexible band I. Remote from the underhanging triangular ledge 6, the end of the next 2, element 4 has a complementary outer triangular overhang I cooperating with ledge 6- to form a joint 6.1.
Behind the element 4 and away from the joint Ii, 1 the band I may have an end 8 provided with a slot 9 located between the end 8 and the joint 5, I and in the direction of the band I extent; and said band also being provided with an opening or port I0 between the end 8 and the slot 9.
Opposite or remote end II of the band I is shown without a liner or filler 3, but has a T- he'ad rivet I2 and a pin I3 anchoring the band I directly with the element 4 for the end II to project beyond the ledge end 6 of the element 4.
From the relative right angular position of the strip ends 8-, II (Fig. 5) the T-hcad I2 may be caused to enter the slot 9. When so entered, the strip end II may be swung on the stem of the T-head I2 as a pivot (Fig. 1) to ride under the overhang end I of the element 4 adjacent the end 8. The ledge 6 of the element 4, mounted by the T-head rivet I2 and the pin I3 of the strip end I'I, now registers with the complementary overhang I of the element 4 which has the end 8 now so coacting as to its slot 9 to have the T-head crosswise thereof. Upon movement of the T-head I2 to' the end of the slot 9 toward the opening II], as determined by the register of the ledge 6 and the overhang I, the pin I3 enters the opening I0. There is thus established an alignment holding connection between the ends 8 H of the band I, and it is now an endless flexible strip.
It is to be noted, due to the rivet connection 2 being close to one end of the rigid element 4 on the flexible band I, that the band I- may be caused to travel about pulleys or wheels and the rigid sections 4, as to the relatively free portion toward the ends I, are in a tangential position away from the arc portion of the strip I when passing. over the pulleys or wheels. Inasmuch as this is the portion of the element 4 having the overhang. I, whenthe band- I approaches a straight line in its travel between the wheels, the overhang 1 comes into register position upon a ledge -6. At this position there is such snug alignment relation between the successive elements 4 that the wide marginal base of the ledge I5 is locked against crosswise shifting as to the band I by a force acting toward such base. An out-of-alignment bushing at the opposite side of the band carrier tool 4 is against the broad base portion of the overhang I, which likewise is held from yielding crosswise of the band I, due to the 3 close register relation between the sections 4 at the joints 6, 1.
The portion of the band I back from the end II which is held by the T-head rivet I2 and the pin rivet 13, has a slight inward offset l4, toward which the strip end 8 extends. At the locked position between the ends of the strip, the working end of the strip having the terminus 3 insures location of the element 4 mounted by the rivets l2, 13, in working face register continuity with the adjacent sections 4. The offset l4 thus cates the direction of the band I therefrom in position to take care of the liner 3 mounted by the rivets 2 at the next element 4.
In the instances where a channel guide may be used for the band I and it be desired to have such not project laterally of the elements 4, the heads of the rivets 2 may suflice for directing means to hold the band travel on the side flanges of the channel. However, supplemental directing means may be had by providing plates l5, also serving as washer reinforcing means for the rivets 2. Rivets it may mount a plate near the offset l4,
Referring to the element 4 as to its ledge 6-, at the side of the element 4 having the base of the triangular ledge 6, that portion of the element is longer, while toward the apex of the triangle at. the oposite side of the element 4, the element is not so long. This analogy follows as to the triangular overhang l, but conversely. In a modification of the joint, as shown by Figure 6, resistance against side play for the joint between elements as positively held from longitudinal relative shifting is achieved with complementary faces of continuous twist-like contour. Working element I? may have a longer corner l8, and at said under side a less length corner l9. Successive element I! may have complementary face with a longer corner 28 and a less length corner 2|. The somewhat distorted quadrilateral, forming bounds for the respective faces, shows straight lines throughout around the edges between the four corners.
The elements 4 are elongated tool sections. The joint (Figs. 2, 6) is interengaging means coacting to maintain alignment of the sections along a straight length of the mounting strip l therefor. Said interengaging means comprises triangular projections B, 7, 22, 23. The overhangs 7, 23, provide prolongations, bounded on the side thereof toward the adjacent section by a diagonal across the face of the section. The register between the opposing ends of the sections at a joint is a mating relation. The ledge 6 is an under or inner extension and the overhang 1 is an outer extension. 1
What is claimed and is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A band type of tool comprising an endless flexible carrier strip, a plurality of elongated tool sections positioned in and to end alignment along said strip, each section having an outer working face, an inner strip engaging face, ends and sides,
4 said sections being secured intermediate their ends to said strip so that the section ends may move apart and away from the strip as the sections move to a tangent position along a curved length of the strip, and interengaging means between adjacent ends of the sections for maintaining alignment of the sections along a straight length of the strip, said means including upper and lower triangular projections having their pointed ends extending longitudinally of and at opposite sides of the strip, the upper projection being defined by a prolongation of one side of the section and a diagonal across the face of the section from the opposite side to the extremity of said side prolongation, the lower projection being similarly shaped but of opposite character by being defined by a prolongation of said opposite side of the section and a diagonal from said oneside to said opposite side, and the projection of the adjacent section being similarly defined but of opposite character and therefore complementary to those of the first mentioned section, whereby said sections engage in mating relation with end engagement on the outer side along a diagonal extending from said one side away from a given longitudinal direction of the strip and end engagement on the inner side on a diagonal extending from said one side toward said given direction, to prevent movement of said end from either side.
2. A band type of tool as set forth in claim 1 wherein said triangular extensions provide an overlying extension on one section and an underlying extension on the other section, with the inner faces of said extensions lying parallel to each other and to said inner strip engaging face of said sections.
3. The band type of tool as set forth in claim 1, wherein said endless carrier strip is separable at a point adjacent the securing location of two of said sections providing detachable ends, and means for attaching said ends comprising a lOngitudinal slot in one of said ends and an interfitting T-head on the other of said ends, said ends being attached by inserting said T-head in said slot and rotating the end in alignment with the carrier slot, to locate said T-head in looking position at right angles to said slot.
