Bnusu Filed Aug. 26, 1929 Patented May 13, 1930 PATENT OFFICE EDWIN R. WAGNER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI BRUSH Application filed August 26, 1929. Serial No. 888,475.
This invention relates to brushes and more particularly to a tooth brush.
The principal object of my invention is the provision of a structure which more particu larly adapts a tooth brush to the use for which it is intended.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will be brought out more clearly in the specification, claim and drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my tooth brush. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 3 is a ci'oss section along the line 3 -3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my tooth ,brush, in which the parts of the brush are shown separated.
The imperfections of the ordinary tooth brush, which my invention is intended to remedy, is that when the conventional tooth brush is rubbed over the teeth, the flexible bristles pass over the outer surface of the teeth and do not penetrate the interstices between the teeth, with the result that much foreign matter is left embedded between the teeth. Hence, any amount of effort expended in brushing the teeth fails to cause the bristles to enter the spaces between the teeth, so long as the brush moves in a. horizontal plane.
' The only way in which the conventional tooth brush can be made to enter the spaces between the teeth is by vertical movements of the brush and a degree of care. which children, especially, fail to exercise. The object of this invention is to overcome the defeets herein set out.
One feature of my tooth brush is the provision of a rotary element that is particularly adapted to the contour of the oval teeth.
In Fig. l I have illustrated my brush in a plan view, which consists of a main body portion 1, a detachable portion 2 and a brush proper 3. The various parts are joined together by threaded pins 4 and 5 of identical size, which are adapted to screw into threaded openings 6 and 7 in the body portion of the brush. Since the pins and threaded openings are identical. it is readily understood that the portion 3 may be screwed into the threaded portion 5 when used as an ordinary brush, or the portion 3 may be detached and only the portion 2 used.
It will be noted that the rotary member 8 consists of three rows of brushes 11, 12 and 13, the overall diameter of the inner row 12 being less than the diameters of the outer rows 11 and 13, so as to exactly adapt it to contact with the Whole surface of the teeth. It is readily obvious that when the brush is passed over the teeth while in a horizontal position, the bristles in the rotary portion will penetrate the interstices between the teeth, while the bristles 14 in the member 3 will brush away any forei n matter dis: lodged by the rotary memoer, so that a thorough and complete cleaning of the teeth takesplace in a single operation.
It is apparent that the bristled portions may be used either collectively or individually, i. e. the rotary portion may be used for dislodging foreign matter from between the teeth as a separate unit, or it may be used-in combination with the member 3.
As a matter of convenience, instead of the usual opening. in the end of the brush, I have provided a suitable hook 15 for hanging the brush in anyconvenient place.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to protect vby Letters Patentis:
A tooth brush of the class described. combining a plurality of parts detachably joined together, said parts consisting of a handle having a screw-threaded longitudinal bore in one end, a second part having a screwthreadcd longitudinal pintle rigidly aflixed in one end adapted to engage the screwthreaded bore in said handle. a cylindrical brush composed of a plurality ot rows of bristles. in which the length of the bristles in the end rows are longer than the bristles 9 a. third part consisting of a. body ortion having a screw-threaded pintle rigidly aflixed in one end and adapted to engage the screw-threaded bores in said first and second parts, said body portion of said third part having a plurality of rows of bristles rigidly afiixed thereto.
In witness whereof I have h ereunto affixed my signature this 20 day July, 1929.
EDWIN R. WAGNER.
