Description

Aug. 14, 1928.
G. L. LOISELLE TOOTHBRUSH Filed Oct. 28, 1927 Patented Aug. 14, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOOTHBBUSH.
Application filed October 28, 1927. Serial No. 229,300.
My invention relates to toothbrushes and more particularly to toothbrushes having removable and adjustable brush elements.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a toothbrush having a readily removable brush element.
Another object of my invention is to provide a toothbrush having an improved type of angular adjustment.
A further object is to provide a tooth brush that is inexpensive to manufacture and one that is thoroughly sanitary.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification and drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invent-ion; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the brush element in cross position; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modification; Fig. 5 is an end view taken along the line 55 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a sectional View taken along the line 66 of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I show a toothbrush having a handle 7 and a brush head 8. Handle 7 is preferabl made of bone, hard rubber, celluloid, bakelite or other tough resilient material, and has at one end spring jaws 9, preferably forming substantially a square clamping device. Brush head 8 is provided with a back 10 of similar material to that of handle 7,
and back 10 has a central knob or clamping button 11 formed integrally with back 10. Button 11 is preferably square, though its corners may be rounded off somewhat and its sides are preferably concaved and jaws 9 are interiorly convexed, as at 12, to permit and insure a positive grip on the button by the handle jaws. Button 11 is made sub stantially square to permit the brush to be turned at right angles or crosswise of the handle, in which position the brush has a great measure of usefulness in enabling the inner portions of the teeth to be brushed with vertical strokes, thus reaching and cleaning the vertical recesses between the teeth.
Inasmuch as other angles of the brush position are of no advantage and the user would have no occasion to use the brush at other positions, the two positions herein provided for represent the maximum utility and the simplest arrangement. The button 11 is preferably made with rounded corners and the jaws 9 with convexed interior portions which permit the button to be snapped into place without any other fastening or holding means being necessary and as readily detached for replacement when necessary. The brush being small and inexpensive to manufacture, it can be discarded after reasonable use and a new one substituted, the same handle being kept indefinitely.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6, I show a modified form of handle having a portion 13 of material similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but having metallic spring portions 14 at the ends of which are formed interlocking jaws 15. These metallic spring jaws may be of cast gold, German silver, nickeled steel or other suitable springmaterial that is also non-corrosive. Jaws 15 are provided with overlapping nibs a and b, and a and b. It will be apparent from Figs. 5 and 6 that one jaw member has nibs a and a, and that the other jaw member has nibs b and b. It will be further apparent that nib w is above nib b, but that nib a is below nib b. This results in a spring jaw which has superior gripping propensities and prevents any ordinary twisting of the brush to cause it to become disengaged from the handle.
I claim as my invention:
1. A toothbrush comprising a brush head and a handle therefor, and means on said handle comprising spring aws having an internal head and a central polygonal boss on said head having a groove adapted to receive said head whereby said head may be detachably secured to said handle and its position in said handle changed without removal therefrom.
2. A toothbrush comprising a brush head having a peripherally grooved polygonal boss formed integrally therewith, and a handle having spring portions extending from an end thereof, said spring portions comprising longitudinal resilient members defining a recess between their outer ends to engage said boss.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand.
