Description

ANDREW J.
BARNHART, OF HARTFIELD, NEW YORK.
SECURING AND RELEASING BLOCKS OF LASTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,647, dated April 15, 1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW J. BARNHART, of I-Iartfield, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Securing Blocks to Lasts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical section of a last with a block secured or attached to it, according to my improved Inode. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the block detached from the last; the catch plate being also detached from the last.
My invention consists in securing the block to the last by means of a catch or fastening arranged as will be presently shown and described.
A, represents a shoe last and B, is the block. The block is fitted to the last in the usual manner the front end of the block fitting in a dovetailed or oblique cut or recess (a), in the last the front end of the block being inclined to correspond to the cut or recess (a). The front end of the block has a pin (b), secured in it which pin fits in a hole made in the side of the side of the cut or recess (a), in the last.
In the under side of the block B, there is Inade a recess (c), in which a bent or right angled lever C, is placed, said lever working on a pivot or axis (d), within the recess. The upper and horizontal arm (e), of the lever C, bears against a spiral` spring (f),
and the end of the lower/and vertical arm (g), of the lever has a lip or projection (h), upon it which when the block is iitted to the last catches under a small plate 2'), which is secured to the upper part of the last and at the edge of ad recess (j), in the last as clearly shown in the drawing the spring (f), keeping the lip or project-ion underneath the plate The block is detached from the last by merely inserting a lever or last hook in a hole, al), made horizontally in the block, B, and communicating with therecess (c) see Fig. 2;-by means of a lever or last hook inserted in the hole, (al), the lever, C, will be operated, so as to throw the projection (L), free from the catch plate and the block may then be removed from the last; see red lines Fig. 2.
The above invention is extremely simple and the block may be quickly secured to the last and detached from it.
I do not claim attaching the block, B, to the last, A, by means of a spring catch, irrespective of the arrangement of t-he catch as hereinafter shown, but
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The fastening orl catch arranged substantially as shown, so that t-he insertion of the lever or last hook will disengage it, and allow the block to be freely removed.
