i ATTORNEYS 'GEORGE E. HARTMAN, OF CANDEN, NEW JERSEY.
TOOTHBRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Application lled August 3, 1920. Serial No. 400,970.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HARrMAn, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Toothbrush, of which `the following 1s a specification.
My invention consists of a novel construction of a cylindrical, terminal tooth brush having bristles extending radially from its axis which is especially adapted for cleaning the inner surfaces of the upper or lower teeth, and is adapted to be detachably or permanentlyV secured to any suitable handle or to the end of the handle of any tooth brush of any conventional type.
It further consists of a novel construction of a cylindrical, terminal tooth brush, haying bristles extending radlally toV its axls, and provided with a polygonal or other shaped lug having a locking device thereon.
It further consists of a tooth brush handle having a polygonal seat therein, and a terminal, cylindrical tooth brush having a and provided with a locking. device.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which .my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described. Y
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cylindrical terminal tooth brush and its adiuncts embodying my invention.
ig. 2 represents a top plan view of the cylindrical terminal brush in detached position.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of-thel end of the brush handle, showing the seat therein.
Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of Fi 1, showing the terminal cylindrical bru'sl in a dilerent position.
. tend radially, said head 7, polygonal lug adapted to engage said seat p drical terminal brush 9,
I Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of Pig.
Fig. 6 represents a plan view of the right hand end of Fig. 1.
Figs. 7 and 8 represent "perspective views of different embodiments of my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
designates my novel construction of tooth brush, the same comprising the handle 2, at an end of which is the polygonal or diamond shaped hole or seat 3, in which is inserted the lug or block 4 of similar contour, which is provided( with the locking spring or bar 5, which is rotatably mounted on the pin 6. The block 4 is integral with or secured to the head 7, in which the 4radial bristles 8 are secured in any conventional manner, thereby forming a terminal cylindrical brush, especially adapted to clean the inner surfaces of the teeth.
It will be understood that said bristles exwith respect to the axis of whereby the user can readily clean the inner surfaces of the upper and lower teeth. By the interlocking of the lug 4, with its seat 3, it will be apparent that the cylindrical brush 9 is immovably held in position and prevented from rotation independently of its handle.
In the construction seen in Figs. 1 to 6, I have shown one preferred form, wherein a tooth brush of the conventional type may be readily equipped with my novel cylinit being apparent ring or bar 5 is in igs. 2. and 5, the readily inserted in said spring can be that when the locking s the position seen in polygonal lug 4 can be its seat 3 after which turned into the position seen in Figs. l and 6 and the parts securely held in position.
It will be apparent that by my construction, a new terminal cylindrical brush 9 can be readily placed in position, when the old one becomes worn upon the proper manipulation of the bar or spring 5.
n Fig. 7, I have shown aterminal cylindrical brush 9 of the character already described, and provided with 'radial bristles attached permanently to a tooth brush handle 10, and in Fi 8, I have shown my novel terminal cylindrical brush 9 as permanently attached to the handle 11 of a conventionall describe in detail.
In all the embodiments of my invention, it will be apparent the provision of the terminal cylindrical brush S) enables the user to'readily insert the same in his mouth for the purpose of effectively cleaning the inner surfaces of the upper and lower teeth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A tooth brush for cleaning the surfaces of the teeth, comprising a handle and a terminal cylindrical brush attached thereto and having its axis extendinggr at a right angle to said handle, the bristles extending radially from said axis in every direction to form a complete cylinder.
2. The combination of a tooth brush handle, having a polygonal seat therein, a terminal brush having a polygonal lug thereon, located in said seat, and a rotatable lock- 25 ing device on said lug for locking the latter` 1n lts seat.
GEORGE E. HARTMAN.
