BRUSH.
.A-PPLICATION FILED DEC. 1. I91?- Patented Mar. 11,1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
LOUISE B STRANG AND CHARLES C. POLLOCK, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON,
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1&19.
Application filed December 1, 1917. Serial no. 204,916.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUISE B. STRANG and CHARLES C. PoLLocK, citizens of the United Statesfresiding at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a brush which is primarily intended for washing dishes, although the construction and shape of the brush is such that it may be advantageously employed for washing other articles and. surfaces when desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a brush of this character which is not only so shaped as to facilitate the dislodging of matter from grooves and depresride a brush in which a cap not only serves sions in the surfaces to be washed, but is rovided with an elastlc scraping band whic is so connected with the brush that it may be adjusted on the brush toward or away from the support to be cleaned, thus increasing the efficiency of the brush for the purpose stated.
Another object of theinvention is to proas a cover for the brush head but assists in maintaining the elastic scraping band upon the brush. r.
A further object of the invention is to provide the brush with a handle which is so connected with the brush that through the adjustment of the handle upon the brush the scrapin band may be firmly wedged between t e cap and brush body.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings:--
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough."
Fig, 8 is a bottomplan view of the brush.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the brush head of which the cap and handle have been removed.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein a brush for the purpose set forth is shown constructed in accordance with the invention with the brush including a semioval shaped brush head 5 whch may be formed from any material suitable for the purpose. The brush head 5 is convex at its upper side and has formed therein adjacent its larger end a vertical opening 6. The
opening 6 which serves as a soap chamber has arranged therein a cylindrical reticulated soap holder 7 which in this instance has been shown formed from wire netting. The soap holder 7 has ano en to and terminates at its upper end a ateral y'extending flange 8 which rests upon thecurved top of the brush head 5 and supports the soap holder 7 within the opening 6.
Connected with the brush head 5 in the isual manner to extend below the bottom thereof are tufts of bristles with the tufts arranged in a continuous row 9 which is spaced from the sides of the bottom of the brush head. Other tufts of bristles connected with the brush head 5 are arranged in rows 10 which extend transversely of the bottom of the brush head.
An elastic scraping band 11 has the brush head arranged in the opening therein so that the band 11 will extend a.considerable 'distance below the bottomof the brush head 5 and owing to the resiliency of the material from which the band is formed ma be adjusted on the brush head to cause t e lower edge of the ba nd to lie flush with the bottoms of the tufts of bristles 9 and 10. I The brush head 5 is provided with a resilient cap 12 preferablyof sheet metal, which corresponds in shape to the brush head 5 and overlies the scrap'ingband 11 is preferably of rubber, for a ortion of its length and assists in maintaining the band upon the head 5.
The brush head 5 is provided with a threaded stem 13 which extends above the curved top of the brush head and is a: through a suitable opening in the cap 1 2. A knob 14 which serves as .a handle for the brush is threadedly engaged with the extending portion of the stem 13 and bears against the top of the can 12, so that by turning the knob on the stem 13 the brush head may be drawn within the cap to firmly Wedge the scraping hand between the brush head and. cap.
c By mounting the scraping band upon the brush head in the manner described and providing the brush with the cap 12 and. knob 14: it obvious that a scraping hand 111a); be moved toward Or awn from the surface to L2 cleaned as desired or held inadjusted position upon the brush head of the cap 12 which also serves to close one end oi the soap holder 7. i
From the fi'n'egoing dcscrnition taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is apparent. that a brush tor the purpose set forth has been provided which has a scraping band so connected therewith that the band not only increases the elliciency of the brush as a scrubbing: instrument but may be easily and quickly replaced when the occasion requires.
Having thus described the invention, what is ciainied as new, is
1. In a brush, the combination of a head having a convex upper side, a concave cap SUIJGllHipOSGCl upon said head a scraping hand interiosed between and depending from the head and the cap. and means for clamping the cap on the head and against the band.
2. In a brush of the class described, a brush head, an elastic scraping band on the brush head extending below the same, and a cap into which said brush head its engaging said scraping" band.
in a brush of the class described, a brush head a soap chamber therein, an elastic scraping band into which said brush head extends, said band extending below said head. a can in which said brush head is re ccivcd engaging said scraping band, a stem on said brush head extending through said cap, and a handle mounted to turn on said si'OXll and hearing against said cap.
-2 in a brush, the combination of a head convex at its upper side, bristles carried by and depending from said head, a soap holder of foraminous character carried in the head and open at its upper end, a concave cappesitioncd on the head and closing the upper nd oi the receptacle, :1 scraping hand interposed and secured bet-ween thehcad and the cap a stem extending;- through the head and cap, and combined handle, and clamping means mounted on said stem ahore the cap.
in testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
LOUISE B. STRANG. CHARLES C. POLLOCK.
