Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 191.
Application filed July 19, 1917. Serial No. 181,576.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. MAHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wallowa, in the county of Wallowa and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Cleaning Device, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a brush, and more especially to the class of detachable cleaning evices.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the stock is readily and easily separable from the cleaning member, which is preferably made from commercial sponge rubber, capable of use for applying lather to the face of the user for shaving purposes, a tooth brush, a scrubbing brush, a flesh cleaner, or any other uses.
Another object of .the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the stock and cleaning member are detachably fastened together in a novel manner, so that on separation thereof, the cleaning member, when unfit for use, can be discarded and a new one substituted, thereby making the stockuseful for an indefinite period and susceptible for the attachment of different characters of brushes thereto.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the inventlon consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described,
llustrated in the accompanying drawings,
and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
ln the accompanyin drawing:
Figure 1 is a side e evation of a cleaning devlce, constructed in accordance with the 1nvent1on.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the stock and cleaning member.
3 is a planview.
Flg. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 3, looking toward the opposite side of the device.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the cleaning member.
Similar reference characters indicate like parts throughout all the views in the drawmg.
Referring to the drawing in. detail, A descommercial sponge r ignates the stock, which is formed with a handle 10 and a backing portion 11, the handle preferably being disposed at an inclination relative to the backing 11, and in this backing is molded or otherwise secured a pair of studs 12 for the detachable fastening of the cleanin member thereon, the cleaning member belng hereinafter fully described.
The cleaning member, in this instance,
comprises a pad 13, referably made from ubber, and formed with a thickened portion 14, which is cut away to provide a counter-seat 15 transversely thereof to receive a flexible strap 16, which is cemented, or otherwise secured, in the counterseat 15, for the permanent fastening thereof to the pad 13, the strap 16 being of a length greater than the cross sectional extent of the pad 13 to form diametrically opposed tabs 17 projecting from opposite sides of said pad, in which are permanently mounted the socket members 18 for the stud members 12, the socket members 18 being snapped on the stud members 12 for detachably securing the pad 13 upon the stock.
At the points of location of the tabs 17 the pad 13 is cut away to form finger receiving notches 19, so as to permit convenient engagement of the fingers with the tabs or socket members 18 when it is desired to fasten the pad 13 upon the stock, or for the easy removal of said pad therefrom.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. In an article of the character described, a brush back having a handle, a pair of studs permanently secured to the back in spaced relation to each other, a sponge rubber pad, a transverse strap secured to the inner face of the pad and projectlng at 1ts ends beyond the same to form tabs, and socket members mounted in said tabs for engagement with the studs to detachably fasten the pad to the back.
' 2. In an article of the character described, a brush back having a handle, a pair of studs permanently secured within the back in spaced relation to each other, a sponge rubber pad, a flexible strap secured in a recess of the pad so as to be flush with one face thereof and extended beyond said pad to form attaching tabs, and. socket-members In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as mounted in said tabs for engagement with my own I have hereto affixed my signature the studs to detacha'bly fasten 'the pad to in the presence of two Witnesses. the back, the pad being cut away at the CHARLES A. MAHER.
