Description

F; MAIER.V EYE WASHING DEVICE. APPLICATIN FILED NOV.27| 19I5'- l 'Patented Nov. 20, 1917.

FnIEn'nioH MAIER, or ELIZABETH, lNEW fJiinasiizv.
EY-'wAsHING :envidia4 Speciiicaton of Letters Patent.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDRICHMAIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Eye-Washin Device, of which the following is a ful, clear, and eXact description.
My invention is an improvement in the class of eye-washing devices comprising cups to fit over the eyes and having an inlet and outlet for water and other liquids employed for washing.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the eye washing device; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same.
The eye washing device consists preferably of two cups 10 and 11 connected with each other by a strap 12 to distance the cups according to the eyes of the users. The cups 10 and 11 are closed at the front, preferably by the use of piecesof glass 13, sel curely fastened in place on the cup material to prevent leakage at the front. The rear edges of the cups 10 and 11 are shaped to conform to the face portions around the two eyes thus providing right and left eye cups, so that when the cups are applied both eyes are within the corresponding cups and can be readily washed by the use of a stream of running liquid. The cup 15 is provided at one side with a short inlet nipple 14; and an outlet nipple 15 is arranged on the opposite side of the said cup. Similar nipples 16 and 17 are arranged on the other cup 11. When it is desired to use both cups simultaneously then a piece of tubing 18 is attached to the nipple 14, a piece of tubing 19 is connected to the nip ples 15 and 17, and a piece of tubing 20 is connected with the nipple 16.
In order to hold the pair of cups in position on the face, use is made of a head strap 21 attached at its ends to loops 22 on the outer sides of the cups 10 and 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The strap 21 is passed around the head of the wearer and Patented Nev. Leo, 1era.'
is preferably of an inelastic material to i vof the nipple 14 into the cup 10 and by way of the nipples 15 and 17 and the piece of tubing 19 into the cup 11, from which the liquid can flow out by way of the nipplel 16 and the tubing 2O leading to a suitable place of'discharge. Y It will be noticed that by the arrangement described a flow of liquid is had through both cups to wash both eyes simultaneously and to remove any extraneous matter'that may be on the eyes. If it is desired to wash the eyes with water only the tubing 18 may be readily connected to a faucet connected with a water main to insure a continuous flow of water through both cups held in use on the eyes at the time.
When it is desired to wash but one of the eyes, for instance, the left eye, then the lcup 10 only, and when it is'desired to wash the right eye then the tubing 19 is disconnected from the nipple 15 but held on the nipple 17, and the tube 20 is connected with the liquid supply to allow the water to run through the cup 11 by way of the nipples 16 and 17 and the tube 19. vWhen using the cup singly the liquid may be passed in by way of the nipples 15 or 17 and may flow out bv way of the nipples 14. or 16.
By the use of the glass front, a physician or other person can readily observe the action of the washing liquid on the eye or eyes of the user, and the latter by the aid of a mirror can likewise observe the action of the liquid.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
As a new article of manufacture, an eye washing device, consisting of a pair of cups, each having its rear edge shaped to conform to the portion of the face around the ofthe wearer, the outer nipple of each cup 1n testimony whereof I have signed my belng adapted to receive a tube and a short name to this speccationrn the presence l@ tube adapted to have lts ends secured on the of two subscribing Witnesses. Y
inner nipples of the cups or one end on the r nipple of either Cup, whereby provision is FRXEDRICH MAIER' made for causing' the liquid to How through Vtnesses:
both, or one of the cups to permit both eyes LUDWIG KUHAR,
or either eye to be Washed. JOSEPH KUTSHMEIR.
