STTE
ALPHONSE ARTHUR PICARD, OF NEW YORK, N.- Y.
BRUSH.
Application filed December 14, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALPHoNsE ARTHUR Promo, a native of Canada, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which. the following is a specifie cation.
My invention is applicable to brushes of various kinds, but is herein shown and described as embodied in a tooth brush, which it is particularly adapted,the object in any case being to so construct brush and handle that they may be readily attached or detached, the one from the other- This feature of detachability is especially efiicacious in the case of so called sanitary tooth brushes in which a used brush portion may be discarded and a new one substituted. in the present case in an easy and simple manner.
The invention. consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts described Fig. 5, a side elevation of the handle de-' tached from the brush back;
Fig. 6, a longitudinal section of the brush, taken upon plane of line 6-6, Fig. 4;
Fig. 7, a transverse section of the brush.
The handle H, is preferably formed of a single piece of elastic resilient metal, although other suitable elastic resilient material may be substituted with like result. It may consist of a single thickness of flat material, as in Fig. 2, permanently bent and set into requisite shape, or, for instance, of
a wire doubled upon .itself and so bent and set, as in Fig. 3. In either case it is formed Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 191 7. Serial No. 136,841. 1
with a clutch hook h, and with a snap hook it, the two being spaced apart for a distance equal approximately to the portion of the back 6, of the brush member B, to be spanned by the section if, of the handle, intermediate between said clutch hook it, and snap hook 72,. That is to say, the said span k is equal in length to that of the groove 6, formed in the brush back 6, for its reception,while the hooks h, h, are inturned toward the center, so as to fitover and engage the brush back shoulders 6 ,6 as indicated in Fig. 1. Obviously the best arrangement for a tooth brush is to form the clutch hook it, at the outer extremity of the handle as shown in the drawings, although this is not essential; and for other kinds of brushes the positions of the hooks h, h, might be transposed without deviating from the spirit and intent of my invention.
In Figs. 3 and 5 reference characters it", h'* and k correspond to the parts 71., h and b of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The side walls of the groove 5, in the back 6, of the brush B, obviously perform an important. function in that they engage the sides of the intermediate section k of the handle and thus insure the alinement and copulation between handle and brush.
By my invention I attain a very simple, cheap yet efl'ective construction and arrangement of parts, especially adapted to the requirements of a sanitary brush.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is, y
1. A brush of the character designated, comprising a handle of elastic resilient material formed with a clutch hook andwith a snap hook for engagement with the under faces of a brush-member back, and a brush member having a back formed with a groove to receive the portion of the handle intermediate between said clutch hook and said snap hook.
2. A brush of the character designated, comprising a brush member having a back formed with a groove extending lengthwise therethrough, and a detachable handle therefor composed of a single piece of elastie resilient material receivable Within said under face of said back at opposite ends groove and having at one end a clutch hook thereof.
engageable With the under face of the back T at one end thereof, and With a resilient snap ALPHOB SE ARTHUR PICARD' hook intermediate the ends of said handle vVitnesses:
the terminals of said hooks extending t0- GEO. l/VM. MIATT,
Ward each other for engagement With the DOROTHY MIATT.
Sopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). 0.
