Abstract

The key of this invention is a chain sprocket combined a set of ratchet wheel (lashing gear), which can be pushed to turn by a handle with ratchet device to pull the chain in through its inlet/outlet unit. This product can be used in transport industry for secure cargo, and it can be also used in other place here the application needs to pull in chain.

Description

Chain Load Binder (Ausbinder) Current situation:

To ensure the reliability -and quickness on restraint loads on truck for transporting is a very important issue for road safety. When the truck load gets heavy, truck driver often choose load chain and chain binders to restraint their load. This invention is to provide a new type chain load binder as a simple, affordable devise in order to restraint loads quickly and safely.
In most of case, it will be used on truck transporting industry but it also can be used on ship or any other transporting industries.

Chain and chain load binders have been used for many years for tying down goods. There are two major chain load binders currently in the market place, one is called Lever type, as illustrated at Fig. 1, and another=one is Ratchet load binder, as in Fig. 2.
(The end hooks can be grab hook, claw hook or any other hooks, but hooks are not included in this invention.) The Lever type chain load binder as in Fig 1.
The lever load binder has. 2 hooks on each side and they are hooked onto the restraining chain.
The working principle of this chain load binder is to push a longer side of lever (handle) for' leveraging the short side lever to gain the binding force. The distance between the 2 hooks will be shortened when the short lever moves inwards, to pull the hooks in, thus, to binding the loads.

This binder is difficult to use, if the load is solid material, the operator will find difficult to push the handle over because there is less squashing you can make, and vise versa, you can not achieve a tie down force in full if the load is made from soft material.
This binder will be dangerous to use if truck driver use extension bar to attach on handle, many accident has been happened involve with load binder.

The Ratchet load binder is illustrated in Fig. 2.
There are two hooks connected to left hand and right hand screw bars, which are screwing to both ends of body, the body engaged to a handle through a sprocket in the, middle. When you turn the body by swing around the handle, both sides of screw bars will move in and to pull the hooks in, to tie down the goods. When you swing the handle in other direction, you can extend the screw bar for releasing the load. This load binder is better than lever type one but it is expensive and you have to unwinding the screw bar all the way out every time you use it, which is time consuming.

New Chain Load Binder: Fig: 3 The chain binder in accordance with this invention comprises a set of lashing chain with hook on one end, a chain sprocket, a lever handle with cam on bottom, a pair of lashing gear (ratchet wheel), a chain inlet/outlet unit, and one chain striper sits between them. There is a half moon shape chain guide. There are also two spring loaded plates, one is on main body for stopping the lashing gear unwinding call stop plate, and the other one is on handle for pushing the lashing gear, call pushing plate. All of those parts are assembled on main body.
There is one hook fitted on swivel bar on the other side of chain binder.

SUBSTITUTE SHEET (RULE 26) How is it working?
When it is working, pulling the handle towards to right, (as you face the attached drawing), the pushing plate is engaged to lashing gear and through this, the force will be transferred to the chain sprocket, the chain sprocket turns and pulls lashing chain inwards, for lashing.

When the handle is in the finishing position, where the pushing plate hit against the step on main body, the stop plate will engage to the lashing gear by the spring to take the force from the pushing plate and handle, this will free the handle goes back and do next one, keep repeat this action until the lashing finish.

The tooth on both of the lashing gear has right angle in front and round shape on the back, in other words it only can be engaged with pushing plate and stop plate at front direction, can not be engaged with them on its back side, this allows the handle to move back easily.

When the lashing is finished, the handle shall be swung to at the most left position to keep the handle close to swivel bar and its hook, the pushing plates will be all time engaged with lashing gear to lock the handle down, Fig: 4 To release the goods, the pushing plate shall be pulled up by hand to disengage it from the lashing gear and move the handle all the way to the most right side, pass the step point on main body. At this position the cam on the bottom of the handle will push the stop plat out, to disengage it from the lashing gear, which means the both plates are disengaged from lashing gear, so the chain sprocket is free and the lashing chain is free to be pulled out by hand.

The advantages of this chain binder is it is safer, quicker and suites to more job applications.
It can overcome the above mentioned other two type load binders technical problems.

Other parts of Chain Binder: Fig:5 The chain inlet/outlet unit is required to ensure the chain enters and comes out from the binder smoothly and not twisted, the half moon chain guide be used to keep chain in the position to engage to the sprocket, and the chain stripper is to make sure the chain moves towards to the outlet when it is parting from chain sprocket, not follows the chain sprocket and moving down.

The Chain sprocket can be designed in other shapes if it is needed. Here only gives two shapes but the other design of sprockets shall be included in this invention.
Fig:6 The material has to be steel, and it has to be hardened and tempered to be able to take the force. The surface can be either zinc plated or painted finish. There will be several different sizes to suite to the size of chain. And the lashing capacity of whole unit has to be tested and approved according to appropriate standards.

The whole concept is to provide an affordable, convenient, safety chain binder for transporting industry. I hope this invention can help those truck drivers who have been waiting for new chain binders for a quite long time.

SUBSTITUTE SHEET (RULE 26) Note:
1. Chain which has been mentioned in this invention is round link chain.
2. Chain outlet/inlet unit has been redesigned after file in provisional application, to make the product more compact and works more reliable.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET (RULE 26)
